Feather edge

Generally, the length of thread used should be more than 1.5 times the diameter, the section thickness around the hole more than 0.6 times the diameter. Avoid having feather edges, and limit tightening with the bolt shoulder. 

In the preparation of smears, it is necessary to get a uniform thin film to avoid cells bunching up in layers. Start with a smaller sample amount if this is occurring. The cells will spread out over the surface of the slide and form a film with a feathered edge, if done properly. 

Bonding admixtures are particularly useful for patching and remedial work where a feathered edge is required. 

Higher strengths and better workability may be obtained if all material passing the No. 50 sieve is screened out. The more fines, the less aggregate may be blended in with the epoxy resin. Where it is desired to fill shallow spalled areas, a relatively fine sand of uniform grading may be used, particularly, where feather-edging is to be done. 

In metal stamping, avoid feather edges when shearing. Internal edges shorrld be rounded, and corners along the edge of the strip stock should be sharp.

Any material which escapes during the moulding process results in a feather edge on the moulding known as a flash. This can be removed by the operator during the curing cycle of the next moulding. 

Feather edges on thread runouts should be avoided to prevent cross threading or thread damage.

Latex modified mortar and EP mortar is often substituted for cementitious patching materials when a fast cure time, higher bond strengths, and some feather edging is required. Then properties can be adjusted within fairly wide margins by suitable formulation so that they can be tailored to fit the job at hand.
