Subjective evaluation of odor emission is made difficult by the phenomenon of odor fatigue, which means that after persons have been initially subjected to an odor, they lose the ability to perceive the continued presence of low concentrations of that odor. Therefore, all systems of subjective odor evaluation rely on preventing olfactory fatigue by letting the observer breathe odor-free air for a sufficient time prior to breathing the odorous air and evaluating its odor content. Usually an activated charcoal bed is... [Pg.409]

The situation concerning a possible role for free radicals in fatigue of skeletal muscle therefore remains unclear. Antioxidants may have some inhibitory role in fatigue of a diaphragm preparation but our experiments using a similar intact skeletal muscle system have not supported these conclusions. It is therefore possible that antioxidants are only beneficial where tissue viability is compromised. Further work is required to clarify this area. [Pg.178]

The lead-free solders are mostly based on Sn-containing binary and ternary alloys. Among them, the Sn-Ag system is one of the earliest commercially available lead-free solders and has been recommended for general-purpose use as a substitute for Sn-Pb eutectic solder. Addition of nano-particles of second phase helps in improving thermo-mechanical properties such as melting temperature, mechanical strength, mechanical fatigue resistance, creep resistance and solder-joint reliability. [Pg.242]

Much information is available on the deformation and fatigue behavior of simple thick-walled cylinders [10-17], but it must be remembered that most process reactors will not be a simple hollow cylinder. Components such as connectors, threads and sleeves, windows, and removable closures make a complete analytical solution for a high-pressure system design problem quite involved. Useful design criteria for thick-walled vessels can be derived, however, under the assumption that the material of which the vessel is made is isotropic and that the cylinder is long (more than five diameters) and initially free from stress. The radial and tangential stresses in the walls are then only functions of the radius coordinate (r) and the internal pressure. Given the outer-to-inner wall radius ratio as o/i = w, and the yield point (To) of the material, the yield pressure (py) is... [Pg.69]

A characteristic feature of fatigue is the small number of free macroradicals arising in each deformation cycle. However, the heavier the mechanical system of the influence, the greater the number of macromolecules that are broken in each deformation, and the shorter the induction period. [Pg.352]
