For example, NCEP-ATP uses waist circumference to define obesity, while other expert committees use the body mass index (BMI). The ATP guidelines base glucose intolerance on a fasting glucose while others prefer the results of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). As we are better able to quantify the relationship between these factors and the development of cardiovascular disease, the definition of the syndromes and the individual component values will no doubt continue to be refined. 

Fasting glucose levels remained stable after treatment. However, median insulin levels were lower than those before treatment. Weight should be monitored monthly for 3 months, then quarterly. Body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and fasting lipid profile should be monitored at the end of 3 months, then annually. The use of patient self-assessments are encouraged.

Glycemic index (Gl) is an indicator to measure how fast carbohydrate-based food can be converted into glucose after consuming that food for 2-3 h.
