Family cohesion

The SASS assesses the areas of work and leisure, family and extra-family relationships, satisfaction with one s roles and the ability to manage one s environment. These are related to the mediating factors of life stress, family cohesion, social exchange, and social support. One of the advantages of the SASS is that the assessment would not be affected by role changes due to life developments. [Pg.49]

Bernstein et al. [8] addressed what types of patient education tools are currently used in international inherited metabolic disease clinics. A series of surveys were distributed to clinicians working with inherited metabolic disorders as well as to patients and families affected by PKU. The majority of clinicians (86.1 %) agreed that nutrition education affects dietary compliance in their patients. Perceived barriers to dietary compliance included embarrassment and/or frustration with the diet, poor family cohesion, difficulty in food preparation, and the inconvenience of the diet [8]. Clinicians from international clinics indicated one-on-one counseling is the most utilized educational tool regardless of patient age. Phosphorylation has been thought to be correlated to the mitotic chromatin condensation and the transcriptional regulation in interphase (Nowak and Corces, 2004). The mitotic phosphorylation, which was first identified in 1978 (Gurley et al, 1978), occurs at Ser (Wei et al, 1998), Ser (Goto et al, 1999), and Thr (Preuss et al, 2003) in histone H3. The Ser phosphorylation is catalyzed by the aurora kinase family (de la Barre et al, 2000), and is required for the initiation of chromosome condensation but not for its maintenance (dephosphorylation of mitotic chromosomes does not induce chromosome decondensation) (Van Hooser et fl/.,1998). Sister chromatid cohesion is primarily established by the cohesin complex (23). The cohesin complex is a multiprotein complex that contains the structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) family of proteins (24). SMC proteins contain the Walker A motif at their N-termini and the Walker B motif at their C-termini (Fig. 2a). A curious thermodynamic result is connected to the cohesive energy of an ionic liquid. From calorimetric experiments, performed to determine the heat of vaporization along an homologous family of cations, the increment in enthalpy of vaporization per -CH2- group was calculated [25] and it closely matches that observed for the H-alkanes, suggesting that, in the ionic liquid phase, the alkyl chains exist in an alkane-like environment. [Pg.172]

The keratin family of proteins comprises two of the six classes of intermediate filament proteins found in the cytosol of eukaryotic cells. They provide the intracellular structural stability that complements the intercellular mechanical cohesion provided by desmosomes. Our immediate concern is whether Eg, or possibly E, serves as a suitable measure of chemical hardness just as (/ — A) does for molecules. Examination of the data in Table 5.5 shows that it does. There is a good correlation btween Eg and the cohesive energy, as long as related solids are compared. That is, the 4-4 compounds show Eg falling just as AE coh does. The alkali halides also are correlated with each other, but not with the 4-4 cases. In the 2-6 examples, we can compare the CN6 compounds with each other, but not with the CN4 cases, which have their own relationship. We have outlined the diversity and procedural flexibility afforded through the use of appropriately designed synthetic polymers for mammalian cell immobilization. Having selected the acrylate family of monomers because of their diversity, we have shown that mammalian cells may be microencapsulated in uncharged and polyelectrolyte polymer, in polyelectrolyte complexes and inside a cohesive precipitate from a destabilized emulsion all without significant loss of viability. Through this chemical diversity and inherent biocompatibility, these systems hold forth the possibility of improved transplantation therapies for a wide variety of cellular diseases. [Pg.194]
