The battery components are fabricated and processed as shown in the flowsheets of Fig. 23.10. The major starting material is highly purified lead. The cast grids are made into battery anode and cathode plates by the application of a lead oxide paste of 70 percent lead oxide (PbO) and 30 percent metallic lead. Lead ingots are tumbled in a ball mill with airproducing lead oxide and fine lead dust (referred to as leady oxide ). Leady oxide particulates are entrained in the mill exhaust air, which is treated sequentially by a cyclone separator and fabric filter. The used fabric filter bags are shipped to a RCRA-permitled commercially operated ha2ardous waste landfill located in Colorado. All AB, alloys are very brittle and are pulverized to fine particles in the hydrid-ing-dehydriding process (see Sec. 7.2.1). Thus electrodes must be designed to accommodate fine powders as the active material. There are several methods of electrode fabrication Sakai et al [35] pulverize the alloy by subjecting it to several hydrogen absorption-desorption cycles, before coating the resulting particles with Ni by chemical plating. The powder is mixed with a Teflon dispersion to obtain a paste which is finally roller-pressed to a sheet and then hot-pressed to an expanded nickel mesh.
