Extrusion injection moulding

In this chapter we shall discuss some important unit operations as far as the processing properties are concerned, viz. extrusion, injection moulding, spinning and stretching. 

Under the Mater-Bi trademark, Novamont produces different classes of starch-based biodegradable materials and blends of starch with synthetic polymers. Each class is available in several grades to meet the needs of specific applications. Classes include grades for film and sheet extrusion, injection moulding and foams. 

Biodegradable polymers are similar in terms of their chemical structure to conventional thermoplastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. They can be processed using standard polymer processing methods such as film extrusion, injection moulding and blow moulding. 

The different processing steps and the processing conditions are fully described in a previous publication.15 After powder mixing and extrusion, injection moulding is used to produce standard dumbbells. The injected dumbbells are usually equilibrated (54% RH, 23 °C) for 6 weeks before testing. The different composites elaborated are presented in Table 1. 

Many antimicrobials are incorporated for use in packaging materials, particularly films. These antimicrobial additives, with thermally stable subsequent processing methods such as extrusion, injection moulding and so on, may be incorporated into the polymer melt or by solvent compounding [46]. 

Fibre-reinforced NR composites are manufactured by various processes, the most common being extrusion, injection moulding and compression moulding (Figure 9.6). To fabricate glass-reinforced NR composites with unidirectional long fibres, extrusion is not used because this process can only result in short fibre-reinforced polypropylene composites (a few millimetres at most).

In 2009, a facility capable of manufacturing 10,000 tonnes/year of PBS and its copolymers was constructed by Hexing Chemical (tradename Hexing PBS). The facility can manufacture resins for extrusion, injection, moulding, thermoforming and blowing grade [41].
