Foamed polystyrene - which is also known as expanded polystyrene - is used extensively in a variety of applications, ranging from packaging peanuts to insulation board and single-use cups and plates. We produce it by two processes foam extrusion and bead expansion. Both types of expanded polystyrene consist of closed cells, i.e., bubbles with continuous walls. We can visually distinguish the two types of foam by the fact that products made by the expanded bead process consist of discrete beads that are welded together...

A large variety of hose constructions are produced by the rubber industry for a wide range of applications. To contain transported liquids, usually under pressure, it is necessary to reinforce the hose construction with fabric, yam or short fibres to constrain expansion of the rubber. Although hand-built construction using fabric still represents a proportion of the production, it is also very common to use yams either braided or knitted directly onto the hose liner. For heavy duty purposes it is also necessary to use wire, in a braided form, to either reinforce or protect the hose from external damage. Use of short fibres as reinforcement represents a small proportion of hose production and requires specialised dies for extrusion to orientate the fibres circumferentially.

Ring expansion of the sulphonamide reaction199 (equation 144) demonstrates the ability of a ruptured sulphur-centred free radical to undergo 1,3-Fries type migration200 (equation 145). Sulphur dioxide extrusion may also provide a synthetic route to fi-lactams201 (equation 146). 

Optimization of the extrusion parameters can be difficult because of the delicate balance between the blowing agent expansion and part shaping. Part warpage and shrinkage are sometimes difficult to predict.

Real polymers are more complex than these simple mechanical models. The ability to modify their structure and the good cost/ performance ratio makes polyolefins technically and commercially attractive for mechanical energy absorption. This is especially true for High Melt Strength (HMS) PP which allows continuous extrusion foaming.
