Exposure management control

UV radiation illustrates the basic principles of toxicology in that individual sensitivity varies greatly, and it is best to limit your dose (exposure) to control your response. The challenge is to understand and manage the risk and benefits of our individual exposure and resulting acute and long-term effects. 

The current approach to risk management (control of exposures) for hazardous chemicals differs from the approach for radionuclides under AEA. In particular, the two approaches to risk management attach different meanings to the terms acceptable and unacceptable commonly used to describe the significance of health risks. 

Political dimensions of risk management contribute to the quality, type and level of information needed during assessments of hazards, exposures and regulatory impacts. This book illustrates just how Member States may sometimes need to establish different levels of protection within their national territories. The analysis of the national approaches demonstrates why Member States give preference to certain risk management control instruments.

A.26. Records of occupational radiation doses. Inspection personnel should selectively review records of individual occupational doses, including internal and external doses. Activities should be observed to ensure that procedural and management controls are effective. This includes controls for radiation areas and contamination areas as well as inspection of activities for internal and external dosimetry. Exposures of personnel that result in the operator s reference levels for effective doses or intakes being exceeded should be noted.
