Exposure duration time-window

Immediate Aftermath of Trauma. We recommend instituting, whenever possible, a 10 day course of propranolol (10 mg three times daily) within hours of exposure to a severe traumatic stressor. Although the data supporting it remains limited, the brief duration of therapy coupled with the relative tolerability of propranolol supports use of this intervention. This medication therapy should, of course, be implemented in conjunction with appropriate crisis intervention services. Benzodiazepines should be avoided if possible during this critical window of vulnerability.
