Exit Strategy

Postmoney value is the market cap after the funding is complete and is what new investors focus on. Postmoney value is measured against other deals and the likely step-up in value prior to the next funding evenf. As the biotech market heats up or cools down, comparable values rise and fall. During the venture capital stage, investors try to estimate when the company can do an IPO (their exit strategy) and at what premoney value, and based on this estimate, coupled with their target rate of refum, they discount back to what would be a reasonable private postmoney value.

Although not included in the letter report, two other issues of concern to the committee are the retention of key staff personnel throughout the JACADS closure program and the development of an exit strategy. These issues are reviewed in more detail in the following sections. 

If required, pump-and-treat groundwater remediation and/ or in situ bioremediation are options, but unlike with soil excavation, it may take years for contaminant concentrations to reach the agreed end point. The postclosure part of the closeout activities plan should contain a well-defined exit strategy for any necessary postclosure remediation, based on a sampling methodology that defines progress and determines when the end point is reached.

The question is what is the institution able to do if faculty do not fulfill their corporate contracts. There is no recourse. The universities are simply not inclined to fire tenured faculty for violations of that kind. In some cases the institution reimburses the corporation. In other cases the institution negotiates some exit strategy that both parties can live with. In some cases real legal recourse is taken. This is a major problem. 

Based on the risks and the scenario analyses (see reward section), project teams should elaborate on the upside and downside potential of the project. This includes answers to questions such as, what would happen if the technology were available sooner than expected or what would be the impact if important factors did not develop as expected This also includes outlining an exit strategy (for example, to sell the patents to the competitor or license the technology).

Notice also a lead-funding role in several of these startups by the prominent Palo Alto-based VC firm. Draper Fisher Jurvetson, via the patriarch of nano-company ventures, Steve Jurvetson. A profitable exit strategy for Jurvetson might be to merge a subset of these venture-backed companies into a single entity that is then flipped (sold) to an Intel-like superpower semiconductor outfit. While that might not be the optimal financial outcome... 

An acceptance of higher level of building damage in an earthquake up to what is often termed near coUapse. Most seismic codes are based around a safe exit strategy which requires a lower level of damage.
