Existence, extent

Relative use in patients with increased intracranial pressure or head injury. Preservative-free morphine should be used with extreme caution in patients with head injury or increased intracranial pressure. Pupillary changes (miosis) from morphine may obscure the existence, extent, and course of intracranial pathology... [Pg.182]

To a large extent the reservoir geology controls the producibility of a formation, i.e. to what degree transmissibility to fluid flow and pressure communication exists. Knowledge of the reservoir geological processes has to be based on extrapolation of the very limited data available to the geologist, yet the geological model s the base on which the field development plan will be built. [Pg.76]

But there is a price to be paid. Good Workmanship acceptance criteria for conventional techniques must, to a certain extent, be conservative, in order to compensate for the inherent "limitations" of conventional NDT. And, what is worse, the degree of conservatism is more or less unknown. Therefore the question can be asked "if the historic background of present NDT practice would not exist, what would we like to know today about a weld to be able to accept or reject it "... [Pg.947]

The spin in quantum mechanics was introduced because experiments indicated that individual particles are not completely identified in terms of their three spatial coordinates [87]. Here we encounter, to some extent, a similar situation A system of items (i.e., distributions of electrons) in a given point in configuration space is usually described in terms of its set of eigenfunctions. This description is incomplete because the existence of conical intersections causes the electronic manifold to be multivalued. For example, in case of two (isolated) conical intersections we may encounter at a given point m configuration space four different sets of eigenfunctions (see Section Vni). [Pg.667]

Ethyl acetoacetate is a tautomeric substance which at room temperature exists as an equilibrium mixture of the keto and enol forms, the latter form being present to the extent of about 7%. [Pg.264]

L. Holmia, for Stockholm). The special absorption bands of holmium were noticed in 1878 by the Swiss chemists Delafontaine and Soret, who announced the existence of an "Element X." Cleve, of Sweden, later independently discovered the element while working on erbia earth. The element is named after cleve s native city. Holmia, the yellow oxide, was prepared by Homberg in 1911. Holmium occurs in gadolinite, monazite, and in other rare-earth minerals. It is commercially obtained from monazite, occurring in that mineral to the extent of about 0.05%. It has been isolated by the reduction of its anhydrous chloride or fluoride with calcium metal. [Pg.193]

Thus, strong arguments against all of the obvious nitrating species acting alone can be found. However, as has been pointed out, the extent to which ions require solvation by nitric acid molecules in this medium is unknown, and such solvation would influence the apparent order with respect to the stoichiometric nitric acid. The possibility also exists that more than one mechanism of nitration, excluding nitrosation, is operative. [Pg.104]

Carbonic acid is formed when carbon dioxide reacts with water Hydration of car bon dioxide is far from complete however Almost all the carbon dioxide that is dis solved m water exists as carbon dioxide only 0 3% of it is converted to carbonic acid Carbonic acid is a weak acid and ionizes to a small extent to bicarbonate ion... [Pg.805]

The elution order for neutral species in MEKC depends on the extent to which they partition into the micelles. Hydrophilic neutrals are insoluble in the micelle s hydrophobic inner environment and elute as a single band as they would in CZE. Neutral solutes that are extremely hydrophobic are completely soluble in the micelle, eluting with the micelles as a single band. Those neutral species that exist in a partition equilibrium between the buffer solution and the micelles elute between the completely hydrophilic and completely hydrophobic neutrals. Those neutral species favoring the buffer solution elute before those favoring the micelles. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography has been used to separate a wide variety of samples, including mixtures of pharmaceutical compounds, vitamins, and explosives. [Pg.606]

Ionic polymers may exist as undissociated, unsolvated ion pairs undissociated ion pairs solvated to some extent solvated ions dissociated to some extent or some combination of these. The propagation rate constant kp and the dissociation equilibrium constant K of the lithium salt of anionic... [Pg.420]

There is nothing unique about the placement of this isolated segment to distinguish it from the placement of a small molecule on a lattice filled to the same extent. The polymeric nature of the solute shows up in the placement of the second segment This must be positioned in a site adjacent to the first, since the units are covalently bonded together. No such limitation exists for independent small molecules. To handle this development we assume that each site on the lattice has z neighboring sites and we call z the coordination number of the lattice. It might appear that the need for this parameter introduces into the model a quantity which would be difficult to evaluate in any eventual test of the model. It turns out, however, that the z s cancel out of the final result for, so we need not worry about this eventuality. [Pg.514]

The Hydrate and Enol Form. In aqueous solutions, acetaldehyde exists in equihbrium with the acetaldehyde hydrate [4433-56-17, (CH2CH(0H)2). The degree of hydration can be computed from an equation derived by BeU and Clunie (31). Hydration, the mean heat of which is —21.34 kJ/mol (—89.29 kcal/mol), has been attributed to hyperconjugation (32). The enol form, vinyl alcohol [557-75-5] (CH2=CHOH) exists in equihbrium with acetaldehyde to the extent of approximately 1 molecule per 30,000. Acetaldehyde enol has been acetylated with ketene [463-51-4] to form vinyl acetate [108-05-4] (33). [Pg.50]

Demonstrated reserve quantities are estabUshed by measurements including drillings surface sampling, etc. Inferred reserves are those derived from geological survey information, not by measurement of the extent of the particular reserve. Not included herein are identified marginal and speculative resources, such as the oil-field and geothermal brines and lithium-hearing clays. These latter reserves are speculative as to extent, not existence. Total undiscovered clays in the western United States are speculatively estimated at 15 x 10 t lithium (16). More detailed Hsts of reserves are also available (15,17). [Pg.222]

The development of fiber optics technology, user-friendly displays, and enhanced data presentation capabihties have made on-line analysis acceptable within the plant manufactuting environment. However, it is apparent that a barrier stiU exists to some extent within many organizations between the process control engineers, the plant operations department, and the analytical function, and proper sampling is stiU the key to successful process analytical chemistry. The ultimate goal is not to handle the sample at ah. [Pg.397]

Measuring Protein Sta.bihty, Protein stabihty is usually measured quantitatively as the difference in free energy between the folded and unfolded states of the protein. These states are most commonly measured using spectroscopic techniques, such as circular dichroic spectroscopy, fluorescence (generally tryptophan fluorescence) spectroscopy, nmr spectroscopy, and absorbance spectroscopy (10). For most monomeric proteins, the two-state model of protein folding can be invoked. This model states that under equihbrium conditions, the vast majority of the protein molecules in a solution exist in either the folded (native) or unfolded (denatured) state. Any kinetic intermediates that might exist on the pathway between folded and unfolded states do not accumulate to any significant extent under equihbrium conditions (39). In other words, under any set of solution conditions, at equihbrium the entire population of protein molecules can be accounted for by the mole fraction of denatured protein, and the mole fraction of native protein,, ie. [Pg.200]
