Excavation complex

Because of the geologic and compositional complexity present in this part of Southern Maryland, many more samples (especially more transects of the St. Mary s Hill) would aid in better understanding the observed trace element distributions. Archaeological excavation in the St. Barbara s brickyard area will be important in determining if this might have been the site where the Chapel bricks were made. 

The obsidian excavated from Trinidad de Nosotros demonstrates that obsidian trade during the Postclassic period was as complex as other periods. And, inland trade, as seen, through evidence of a trans-shipment port, was different than coastal trade. In addition to the cultural aspect of this study, we have demonstrated that it is possible to successfully use a field-portable XRF to correlate obsidian artifacts to their sources. Not only were sources identified, but the process was rapid (4-6 minutes per sample), cost-effective, and as accurate and precise as more traditional methods of analysis. Above all, and perhaps most importantly, when working with artifacts from museum collections and foreign countries, the process was non-destructive to the artifacts. 

In spite of these complexities, there is an electrochemistry of soil treatment and it has worked quite well in some cases. It exists not only in decontamination work but also in dewatering (electrodrainage). Thus, a mountainous mass of soil, say from mining excavation, may be in danger of starting to flow under gravity. In the past such flows have rolled down onto villages with fatal consequences. Clearly, the tendency to flow depends on the viscosity of the system and how this is affected by its water content. Insertion of a series of electrodes into the potentially mobile soil mass and a current flow could be used to remove water from the soil and reduce its flow properties. 

Panto and Kretzoi were the first to collect, in 1955, fossils from a site of this locality complex (Kretzoi, 1956). With my colleagues I carried out excavations from 1965 to... 

The problem of the correct sequence of excavated Peruvian textiles is a complex one. Until we have an accepted seriation, it will be difficult to draw any conclusions regarding the temporal distribution of dyes in any area. 

The bronze production in China was both long-lasting and extensive. A lot of bronzes were produced in these 3000 years As an example, over 1295 mirrors have been excavated and listed in publications during 1923-1966 when Barnard compiled his tables (4). When we add the pieces in Western collections which have come out of China without provenance data and the numbers of objects lost, still undiscovered, or melted down as scrap, the totals are staggering. The story of Chinese bronze alloy compositions is a complex one. 

However, the scenario is more complex. The process can be looked upon as a semicontinuous counter current process. Excavation of furnaces after cooldown, have given a good understanding of the process. In Fig. 1.1, the inner zone of an electric arc furnace is shown just before stoking of the furnace. 

The mined oil sand is free-casted onto windrows from which buck-etwheel reclaimers load the oil sand onto conveyors that carry it to surge pile and dump pockets. (In the Suncor operation, the oil sand is mined directly by bucketwheel excavators and conveyed to a surgebin.) From the surge pile and dump pockets, a complex arrangement of feeding devices and conveyors are used to deliver oil sand to tumblers at a uniform feed rate. 

For both the excavation phase, and the long term phase with emplaced buffer, backfill and heater, the analyses shall be performed with increasing degree of complexity of coupling. A comparison matrix will be established in order to compare the implications of various orders of complexity of the coupling, as shown in table 1.
