Each dimensionless group represents a rule for scale-up. Frequently these individual scale-up rules conflict. For example, scale-up on dynamic similarity should depend chiefly upon a single dimensionless group that represents the ratio of the applied to the opposing forces. The Reynolds, Froude and Weber numbers are the ratios of the applied to the resisting viscous, gravitational and surfaces forces, respectively. [Pg.182]

Cyclic Oxidation In many industrial applications it is particularly important for the component to be resistant to thermal shock for example, resistance-heating wires or blading for gas turbines. Chromia, and especially alumina, scales that form on nickel-base alloys are prone to spalling when thermally cycled as a result of the stress build-up arising from the mismatch in the thermal expansion coefficients of the oxide and the alloy as well as that derived from the growth process. The international temperature scale is based upon the assignment of temperatures to a relatively small number of fixed points , conditions where three phases, or two phases at a specified pressure, are in equilibrium, and thus are required by the Gibbs phase rule to be at constant temperature. Different types of thermometers (for example, He vapor pressure thermometers, platinum resistance thermometers, platinum/rhodium thermocouples, blackbody radiators) and interpolation equations have been developed to reproduce temperatures between the fixed points and to generate temperature scales that are continuous through the intersections at the fixed points. [Pg.617]

The samples of l,6-T2-DBpD and l,6-T2-2,3,7,8-Cl4-DBpD are useful in metabolism and mode of action studies. For example, when incubated with rabbit liver microsomes, l,6-T.>-DBpD is extensively metabolized to polar product(s) but only when these preparations are fortified with reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate. Under the same conditions l,6-T2-2,3,7,8-Cl4-DBpD is completely resistant to metabolic attack. Mention has already been made of the effectiveness of corona or plasma treatment in increasing the influence of subsequent or concurrent polymer treatment. As examples of polymers used in this way, mention can be made of reactive cationic polysiloxane [294] and polymerisation on the fibre of tetrafluoroethylene or hexafluoropropylene [299]. Water repellency was also improved by the fluorinated polymers.
