The probe enclosure should be very rigid to avoid microphonics, i.e., mechanical oscillations which affect the signal by, for example, modulating the capacitance between the enclosure and the coil. The main part of the enclosure may be milled out of a block of material, say aluminum, or stout parts (1/4 inch stock for the body and 1/8 or 3/32 inch covers) may be screwed together with many screws. Figure 1.3 shows an example module with thin-film interconnects on a low-temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) substrate [32]. This module measures 81 X 55 X 1.88 mm and has a 14-layer cofired LTCC substrate with silver conductor and 6-layer thin-film interconnects (three on the top and three on the bottom) using Ti/Cu and benzocyclobutane (BCD) structure. A microprocessor is connected to 2 memory chips and over 140 passive components through about 4000 nets.

Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy. Several ESR studies have been reported for adsorption systems [85-90]. ESR signals are strong enough to allow the detection of quite small amounts of unpaired electrons, and the shape of the signal can, in the case of adsorbed transition metal ions, give an indication of the geometry of the adsorption site. Ref. 91 provides a contemporary example of the use of ESR and of electron spin echo modulation (ESEM) to locate the environment of Cu(II) relative to in a microporous aluminophosphate molecular sieve. 

It is possible to identify particular spectral features in the modulated reflectivity spectra to band structure features. For example, in a direct band gap the joint density of states must resemble that of critical point. One of the first applications of the empirical pseudopotential method was to calculate reflectivity spectra for a given energy band. Differences between the calculated and measured reflectivity spectra could be assigned to errors in the energy band... 

The remarkable stability and eontrollability of NMR speetrometers penults not only the preeise aeeiimulation of FIDs over several hours, but also the aequisition of long series of speetra differing only in some stepped variable sueh as an interpulse delay. A peak at any one ehemieal shift will typieally vary in intensity as this series is traversed. All the sinusoidal eomponents of this variation with time ean then be extraeted, by Fourier transfomiation of the variations. For example, suppose that the nomial ID NMR aequisition sequenee (relaxation delay, 90° pulse, eolleet FID) is replaeed by the 2D sequenee (relaxation delay, 90° pulse, delay i -90° pulse, eolleet FID) and that x is inereased linearly from a low value to ereate the seeond dimension. The polarization transfer proeess outlined in die previous seetion will then eause the peaks of one multiplet to be modulated in intensity, at the frequeneies of any other multiplet with whieh it shares a eoupling. 

Eor this example the cost of the battery limits plant is about four times the purchase cost of the equipment. This number is about two for module I-type plants designed and iastalled by the fine chemicals company itself, and about six for expanded module IV-type plants designed and built by contractors.
