The experimental spectra for (SiMe2) at selected temperatures are shown in Figure 32. The growth with temperature of a feature slightly upfield from the low-temperature crystalline peak is thus evidence for existence of deviant-turns within a predominantly ////-conformation. 

Since compound II has a Soret peak at 420 nm and the oxycomplex 416 nm, the equilibrated solution of compound II, H2O2, and compound III should exhibit an intermediate absorption peak. The existence of such an equilibrium has been established with HRP (22) and was also observed with lignin peroxidase (Cai, D., and Tien, M., unpublished results 23). Wariishi and Gold (25) recently proposed the existence of a new enzyme intermediate when compound in is formed in the presence of H2O2. They referred to this intermediate as compound III and suggested it to be a complex between compound III and H2O2. The existence of such an intermediate was based primarily on the Soret spectral properties where a 419 nm maximum was observed. In contrast, we see no evidence for existence of such a complex. The observed 419 nm absorbance maximun can be best explained by the existence of both compounds II and III in solution.

To provide confirming evidence for existence of the isolated moncmer, the fluorescence decay curves were analyzed for 1,5-DNB and NDI-650 in a second solvent system (1-butanol) in which the 1,5-DNB lifetime increased to 2.48 ns. As shown in Table I, the decay parameters for the triple exponential fit to the decay curve of NDI-650 in 1-butanol lead to the same conclusion as the results in dlchloromethane. Particularly important to note is the agreement between for 1,5-DNB (dilute) in 1-butanol and Tj obtained for NDI-650 in 1-butanol. In short, the value is altered by the solvent both for the 1,5-DNB small molecule model and NDI-650. The correlation of the values in the two solvents provides additional evidence for the "isolated monomer" scheme.

Chains can also be broken by a vibrational energy accumulation within the chain, whereby macromolecules can only be produced up to specific molecular weights. However, exact evidence for existence of these effects is lacking. The postulated upper limit of the molecular weight that can be produced and the limiting molecular weight are at present considered to be several tens of millions.

Little is known about these compounds which were prepared by electric discharges through F2-O2 mixtures of the appropriate molar ratio at 60 to 77 K [1]. The analysis of the products gave the molar ratios 5 2 and 6 2 [1], but no conclusive evidence for existence of these oxygen fluorides seems to exist (see, e.g. [2, 3]). A mixture of oxygen fluorides, one of the components might have been OeF2, was prepared by radiolysis of liquid mixtures of O2 and F2 at 77 K [2].
