Eutrophication, role

The only element that was discovered in body fluids (urine). This is plausible, as P plays a main role in all life processes. It is one of the five elements that make up DNA (besides C, H, N, and 0 evolution did not require anything else to code all life). The P-O-P bond, phosphoric acid anhydride, is the universal energy currency in cells. The skeletons of mammals consists of Ca phosphate (hydroxylapatite). The element is encountered in several allotropic modifications white phosphorus (soft, pyrophoric P4, very toxic), red phosphorus (nontoxic, used to make the striking surface of matchboxes), black phosphorus (formed under high pressures). Phosphates are indispensable as fertilizer, but less desirable in washing agents as the waste water is too concentrated with this substance (eutrophication). It has a rich chemistry, is the basis for powerful insecticides, but also for warfare agents. A versatile element. [Pg.40]

Hatton et al. (1999) found elevated concentrations of DMS, DMSP and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) in the eutrophic zone (Arabian Sea) immediately after the SW monsoon. In addition DMSO concentrations were found to correlate with near surface DMS and DMSP. Shenoy et al. (2000) reported the first ever measurements of DMS from the Bay of Bengal where salinity appeared to play an important role in the DMSP production. Shenoy et al. (2002) documented five times higher concentrations of DMS and DMSP in... [Pg.278]

Is Nitrogen Nitrogen Roles of Different Nitrogen Sources in Marine Eutrophication... [Pg.545]

How are projected changes in human activities in coastal water- and air-sheds related to shifts in the composition of new N inputs, and can we hnk these shifts to predictable changes in the composition and ecological roles of primary producers catalyzing marine eutrophication ... [Pg.545]

These results provide insight into the potential biogeochemical and trophic impacts of shifting compositions and quantities of new N compounds impHcated in marine eutrophication. Both the amount and makeup of new N play critical roles in determining the magnitude and composition of primary producers. Structural and functional modifications of the primary producer community strongly influence... [Pg.547]
