T-butyl ethers

Leaded fuels are now banned across Canada. In unleaded gasoline, simple organic compounds are added instead of lead compounds. These octane-enhancing compounds include methyl-t-butyl ether, t-butyl alcohol, methanol, and ethanol. Like lead catalysts.

The reaction of alkylmagnesium reagents with di-r-butyl peroxide leads to alkyl r-butyl ether, t-butyl alcohol, and disproportionation products of the alkyl [96]. Mechanistic studies showed that the initial step is ET. This conclusion was i.a. based on a linear correlation of log rate with the oxidation potentials of the Grignard reagents. Reactions of peroxides are extremely sensitive to metal catalysis, but take place even when high-purity magnesium is used. 

MTBE is also known by the following names Methyl-ferf-butyl ether t-butyl-methyl ether and tert-buty-methyl ether.

Peroxides. These are formed by aerial oxidation or by autoxidation of a wide range of organic componnds, inclnding diethyl ether, allyl eftyl ether, allyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, benzyl butyl ether, n-butyl ether, wo-butyl ether, t-butyl ether, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, olefins, and aromatic and saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. They accumulate during distillation and can detonate violently on evaporation or distillation when their concentration becomes high. If peroxides are likely to be present materials should be tested for peroxides before distillation (for tests see entry under Ethers , in Chapter 2). Also, distillation should be discontinued when at least one quarter of the residue is left in the distilling flask.

A mixture of 140 mg (2.00 mmol) of methyl vinyl ketone, 950 mg of acetonitrile, and 3.00 mg (10 xmol, 1 mol%) of AuCb was slowly added under argon to a vigorously stirred solution of 198 mg (1.00 mmol) of l,4-dimethyl-7-(l-methylethyl)-azulene in 2 mL of acetonitrile. After 1 day at RT, the reaction mixture was filtered through a small pad of silica (2 g) with an additional 5 mL of acetonitrile as eluent. The solvent was removed imder vacuum at 50 (from 15 mbar to 0.2 mbar) and the residue purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (petroleum ether/t-butyl methyl ether, 2 1 Rf = 0.50). Recrystallization from CH2Cl2/Et20 afforded l,4-dimethyl-7-(l-methylethyl)-3-(3-oxobutyl)-azulene as dark blue crystals yield 148 mg (55%), mp 68 °C. ...

Dewar-pyridine derivatives have been implicated as intermediates or isolated as products in other photoreactions of pyridine derivatives in solution phase. Irradiation of pyridine derivatives 129a,b (Scheme 38) at 254 nm in ether/t-butyl alcohol solvent led to the formation of aniline derivatives 131a,b via Dewar-pyridine tautomers 130a,b. The tautomer 130b was isolated when 129b was irradiated in aqueous sodium hydroxide and was shown to be photochemically converted to 131b upon irradiation in diethyl ether solution. ...
