Ethanol siloxane mixtures

On industrial scale, water or water/ethanol mixtures are mostly used as a solvent for aminosilane modification of silica or glass fibres. Water has a profound effect on the silane structure in solution. Alkoxy groups are hydrolyzed to silanols. Those can combine to form a siloxane linkage between two silane molecules, with production of a new water molecule (reaction (A)). [Pg.196]

The chromatographic absorption analysis of alkyl and alkyl-aryl siloxanes has been studied483. The sample in methanolic solution is applied to a column of activated carbon and the straight-chain components, i.e. (CH3)3Si0[Si(CH3)(C6H5)0]MSi(CH3)3, are eluted (as a mixture) with methanol, followed by the cyclic species, e.g. [Si(CH3)(C6H5)0]M, which are eluted with benzene. Some separation of the straight-chain components was achieved by successive elution with methanol, ethanol and butanol, and of the cyclic components by successive elution with acetone and benzene. [Pg.434]

In liquid mixtures of type (2), the solutions of primary interest are azeotropic and other mixtures containing variable amounts of water in organics dehydration of organic solvents containing very small amounts of water. Removal of water from azeotropic mixtures of ethanol-water, isopropanol-water, etc., is extensively practiced using polymeric membranes (of crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol) that are highly polar and selective for water. On the other hand, the membranes that are used to remove VOCs selectively from aqueous solutions are usually highly nonpolar rubbery polymeric membranes, e.g. dimethyl siloxane (silicone rubber). [Pg.436]

Even cationic species such as the (hydrated) hydrogen ion (H ) can be lured into the hydrophobic silicone films from water medium as long as they contain appropriate additives to allow penetration of the analyte. For instance, Nivens et al. [140,141] have reported fabrication of silicone/ sol-gel films using a hydroxy-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane (PDMS-OH), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-ami-nopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) mixture in ethanol-water. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) is added to the mixture to entrap the fluorescent pH indicator dye 8-hydroxypyrene-l,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) [102], after base-catalyzed polycondensation of the silanes and the PDMS-OH. Silica optical fibers are stripped from their jacket at the distal end and dip-coated with the indicator gel before the end of gelation (24 h). The optical fluorosensor is able to measure between pH 6.0 and 8.5 for 6 months if stored in buffer medium. [Pg.350]
