ETHANE HEXACHLORIDE (67-72-1) CjClj Noncombustible solid. Contact with aluminum, cadmium, mercury, hot iron, alkalis, alkali metals forms chloroacetylene gas which is spontaneously explosive in air. Rapidly elevated temperatures may cause ignition or explosion. Liquid attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Decomposes above 367°F/186°C, releasing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride and phosgene. On small fires, use dry chemical powder (such as Purple-K-Powder), foam, or COj extinguishers. A known animal carcinogen. [Pg.439]

Particularly the chlorinated compounds have enjoyed range of applications vinyl chloride (chloro-ethene) as monomer for the production of PVC, tetra- and trichloroethenes as solvents for degreasing, and the insecticides l,l,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) and isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) (benzene hexachloride). The biodegradation of fluorinated aliphatic compounds is generally different from the outlines that have emerged from investigations on their chlorinated, brominated, and even iodinated analogues. They are therefore treated separately in Part 4 of this chapter. [Pg.349]

A procedure for the determination of 7-benzene hexa-chloride and DDT in benzene hexachloride-DDT-sul-fur formulations, employing partition chromatography, is described. The procedure has also been applied to the assay of 1,1,1 -trichloro-2,2-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)-ethane in technical methoxychlor. Results of separation of other insecticidal ingredients are discussed. [Pg.266]

Methoxychlor [1,1,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)-ethane], benzene hexachloride (BHC), chlordan, and toxaphene are chlorinated compounds of recognized importance in the insecticide field. Other chlorinated compounds now undergoing-field testing experiments will, no doubt, soon be added to the list. The need for specific analytical methods is familiar to those concerned with the analysis of formulations containing one or more of the above insecticides. [Pg.266]

Note 1. The solvent used must be one in which the sample is readily soluble and which is miscible with Aopropyl alcohol. For example, in the case of benzene hexachloride, benzene may be used and for hexachloro-ethane, Aopropyl alcohol itself is suitable. [Pg.311]
