Esterification resin catalyzed

As a model esterification reaction, the formation of ethyl lactate has been studied and its complete kinetic and thermodynamic analysis has been performed. The formation rate of ethyl lactate has been examined as a function of temperature and catalyst loading. In early experiments, it was determined that lactic acid itself catalyzes esterification, so that there is significant conversion even without ion exchange resin present. The Arrhenius plot for both resin-catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions indicates that the uncatalyzed... [Pg.375]

If ri = rate of reaction of SA and r2 = rate of formation of DES, then rate of formation of MES = r2 - ri. The equilibrium constant for each of the esterification reactions was determined by allowing the reaction to proceed until no further reaction was observed. For the quantities of resin used, the rate of resin-catalyzed esterification is much slower than that for sulfuric acid-catalyzed reaction. All results are summarized in Table 1. [Pg.377]

Shimizu and Hirai (1987) studied the solvent effect on the kinetics of resin catalyzed esterification of octanoic acid with 1-butanol catalyzed by macroreticular sulfonic acid resin (Amberlyst 15) in the presence of various organic solvents and water. They concluded that the extent of the selectivity of the resin catalyst depend on the alkyl... [Pg.35]

Esterification of organic compounds often involves multiphase catalytic reactions in which contact of liquid (organic substrate) and solid (catalyst) phases are involved. The most common esterification processes fall into the category of two phase (liquid-solid) reactions. Both slurry and fixed bed reactors can be used for ion exchange resin catalyzed esterification reactions. The overall performance of these reactors depends on the inter phase mass transfer, intrinsic kinetics of reaction, physicochemical properties and mixing of the fluid phases. For a continuous process, fixed bed reactors should be preferred, however, in fixed bed reactors small catalyst particles cause higher pressure drop. Special type of support trays may also be required to support small catalyst particles in fixed bed reactors. [Pg.46]

Commercial poly(styrenesulfonic acid) ion exchange resins catalyze hydrolyses of carboxylic acid derivatives, acetal and ketal formation, esterification, condensations, alkylations and rearrangements. The catalyst is filtered from reaction mixtures. In examples such as the dimerization of a-methylstyrene in equation (20), higher yields and cleaner products have been obtained than with p-toluenesulfonic acid or sulfuric acid as the catalyst. [Pg.873]

Direct, acid catalyzed esterification of acryhc acid is the main route for the manufacture of higher alkyl esters. The most important higher alkyl acrylate is 2-ethyIhexyi acrylate prepared from the available 0x0 alcohol 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (see Alcohols, higher aliphatic). The most common catalysts are sulfuric or toluenesulfonic acid and sulfonic acid functional cation-exchange resins. Solvents are used as entraining agents for the removal of water of reaction. The product is washed with base to remove unreacted acryhc acid and catalyst and then purified by distillation. The esters are obtained in 80—90% yield and in exceUent purity. [Pg.156]

Esterification and etherification may be catalyzed by mineral acids or BF3. The reaction of isobutylene with methanol to make MTBE is catalyzed by a sulfonated ion exchange resin. [Pg.2094]
