The principal oxygenated solvents are ketones, esters, glycol esters, and alcohols. They offer much stronger solvency and are widely used as active solvents for synthetic binders. Ketones are characterized by their strong odor, range of water solubility, and evaporation rate. Esters provide solvency nearly equal to ketones but with more pleasing odors. [Pg.226]

The ultimate blend had to be well balanced in its properties. For instance the true solvent should not evaporate before the diluent but vice versa. For a balanced NC-lacquer the following guidelines were, for example, taken into consideration. The maximum possible amount of (cheap) diluent was used in order to minimise the blend price. The amount of hydrocarbon solvent (aromatic solvent, SBP 80/110 or 100/140) normally ranged from 40 up to 65% vol. of the total blend, the true solvents (ketones, esters, glycol esters) from 30-40% and latent solvents (alcohols, DAA, glycol ethers) from 10-20%. This gave the lowest viscosity to the formulation and the use of alcohol also had a price reducing effect. [Pg.50]

Plasticizers can give flexibility to resins and are often used for vinyl resins. For instance, phthalic esters such as dioctylphthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), aliphatic diprotic acid esters, glycol esters, resin acid esters, and phosphoric esters are used as plasticizers. The use of phthalic esters has been decreasing because of environmental regulations. [Pg.1013]

The aldol-type compounds formed in such reactions are really aldehydes having —CHR— groups in the alpha position (except acetaldehyde). These aldehydes are more basic than the aldehydes containing a —CH2— group in the alpha position, and therefore the acidic Mg ion rather than the basic Al(OR)4 might be expected to acid-catalyze the reaction in the typical way to produce an ester (glycol ester) ... [Pg.155]
