ESR spin labels

The protein properties include (1) motions of several proteins monitored by ESR spin labels (Belonogova et al., 1978, 1979 Likhtenshtein, 1976 Steinhoff et al., 1989) and Mossbauer labels (Belonogova et al., 1979 Likhtenshtein, 1976) (2) temperature dependence of neutron scattering for myoglobin (Cusack, 1989 Doster et al., 1989) (3) Mossbauer spectra (Parak et al., 1988) and RSMR spectra (Goldanskii and Krupyanskii, 1989) of myoglobin and (4) mechanical properties of lysozyme crystals (Morozov and Gevorkyan, 1985 Morozov et al., 1988).

We have been searching for experimental methods that can measure surface viscosities as low as 10 10 g/sec or measure the collisional dynamics that should correspond to the Mann-Cooper model. To qualify, the experimental method must respond to dilute monolayers having densities less than 1014 mojecules/cm2. From our experience with the ESR spin label technique for measuring bulk viscosity effects in ultrathin films (8),... 

Investigation of local dynamics in some polymer systems using the ESR spin-label technique at various stages of development has been reviewed. The review shows that interpretation of experimental ESR data, based on the currently available theoretical models, can provide both data complementary to some other experimental techniques and data that clarify some newly observed effects. 

The results obtained by ESR-spin labeling technique reported in this paper allowed us to classify the occurring phenomena in two main groups fast quenching effects preceding inactivation and slow quenching effects in parallel to optical rotatory power and fluorescence temporal variations. 

Pioneering work on surfactantdipid motions in vesicles was carried out some 30 years ago by McConneh and coworkers at Stanford University using esr spin label probes. Komberg...
