Esprit de corps

Traits to avoid include cynicism, laziness, and nay-saying, any of which can undermine a group s esprit de corps and impair its momentum. 

We worked hard, but we also found time for fun. We had picnics and barbecues where our families ate hot dogs, played softball, and hurled Frisbees. Since the databases and tools discussed in this book are unique in that they are freely shared amongst fellow academics, we would be remiss if we did not thank all of the people who, on a daily basis, devote their efforts to curating and maintaining the public databases, as well as those who have developed the now-indispensible tools for mining the data contained in those databases. As we pointed out in the preface to the first edition, the bioinformatics community is truly unique in that the esprit de corps characterizing this group is one of opeimess, and this underlying philosophy is one that has enabled the field of bioinformatics to make the substantial strides that it has in such a short period of time. 

There is an esprit de corps in Japanese companies that is enviable. The average worker is not just an employee — he is the company. This is reflected in their indirect and direct support of the industrial system. The Japanese savings rate is at least 3-4 times greater than in the United States. These savings provide funds for re-investment and modernization and play an important role in the fact that Japan has a re-investment rate at least two times that of the United States. 

Staff morale remained high despite the low-rent surroundings. Most members were relarively recent recruits who were nor used to anything better. Their eccentric accommodations became a perverse badge of distinction that bolstered esprit de corps. They were enthusiastic about their work and ready to make sacrifices to get the job done. As well, they knew that they were making products that were saving lives. Paul McNally, hired in 1953 as an accountant, found that whenever he arrived at the office on a weekend to put in some unpaid overtime, there were always half a dozen others... 

CPD benefited greatly from the esprit de corps generated by close friendships and workplace-centred activities. An active employees association organized sports leagues, special interest clubs, family picnics and anniM.1 dances.
