It is unknown which compounds are involved in Liolaemus communication. However, information available from the chemical composition of the lipidic fraction of the precloacal secretions suggests that individuals, populations and species can be discriminated by the chemical profile of these secretions (Escobar, Escobar, Labra and Niemeyer 2003 Escobar, Labra and Niemeyer 2001). This, in addition to probable chemical differences in the other sources of chemosignals, may allow individual, population and species recognition (Labra et al. 2001). Based on the individual variation observed in the composition of the secretions of L. bellii (Escobar et al. 2001), it is likely that lizards can achieve self-recognition, and also that they can extract detailed information about sender characteristics, as we have seen for L. monticola (Labra 2006). 

Responses at the population level may clarify the potential role of chemosignals in the diversification of Liolaemus. The chemical profiles of the precloacal secretions of two populations of L. fabiani indicate that they show some level of differentiation (Escobar et al. 2003). However, populations of L. lemniscatus and L. tenuis did not show clear patterns of recognition of their own population vs. other populations apparently, chemosignals may not play a key role in the speciation process of Liolaemus (unpublished data).

ML is the approach most commonly used to fit a distribution of a given type (Madgett 1998 Vose 2000). An advantage of ML estimation is that it is part of a broad statistical framework of likelihood-based statistical methodology, which provides statistical hypothesis tests (likelihood-ratio tests) and confidence intervals (Wald and profile likelihood intervals) as well as point estimates (Meeker and Escobar 1995). MLEs are invariant under parameter transformations (the MLE for some 1-to-l function of a parameter is obtained by applying the function to the untransformed parameter). In most situations of interest to risk assessors, MLEs are consistent and sufficient (a distribution for which sufficient statistics fewer than n do not exist, MLEs or otherwise, is the Weibull distribution, which is not an exponential family). When MLEs are biased, the bias ordinarily disappears asymptotically (as data accumulate). ML may or may not require numerical optimization skills (for optimization of the likelihood function), depending on the distributional model.
