Escape plan

Since most of the deaths from fires occur in residences, the NFPA proposes the following safety initiatives to improve fire safety (1) increase fire safety education on fire prevention and what to do if a fire occurs (2) install smoke detectors in all homes and check them periodically to ensure they are working properly (3) practice escape plans with the family (4) install residential home sprinklers to prevent fires from spreading once they start (5) develop products for the home that are more fire safe and produce less toxic combustion products (the latter is proposed by the authors) and (6) study the needs of the populations most at risk (the young, the elderly, and the poor) and implement preventive measures. [Pg.640]

Home escape plan (1) is it practiced every 6 months, (2) are the emergency numbers, a whistle, and a flashlight kept near the telephone, and (3) is the outside meeting place identified. [Pg.641]

Always have an escape plan in case you are attacked. [Pg.139]

In order to safely adopt a phased approach it is necessary to provide and maintain additional fire protection measures and supporting management arrangements. It is often the case that those with physical impairments, either temporary or permanent, are moved to a place of relative safety as part of the personal emergency escape plan (PEEP) (see Chapter 10). [Pg.191]

Do you have an emergency action or escape plan or procedure ... [Pg.460]

Create a plan in case of fire. Practice a fire escape plan with your famiiy. Identify two exits for every room and assign jobs for rescuing small children or pets. [Pg.211]

This mystery remained unsolved because the immediate problem was so urgent. Early in July, John Pehle and I had a conference with State Department representatives. We presented a plan whereby the escape of Jews from Nazi Europe could be financed. [Pg.192]

DaimlerChrysler has been working on hybrid cars while Opel General Motors has built a hydrogen-powered car, HydroGen 1. Ford plans to make its SUVs lighter and more aerodynamic and had plans to introduce an electric version of its Escape SUV. Pininfarina s Metrocubo of 1999 is a hybrid car. [Pg.162]

Reading the literature on mammalian semiochemistry over the past decade, a chemist is impressed by the enormous volume of biological information that has been gathered in well planned and meticulously executed studies of the modulation of the behavior of mammals by the chemicals released by con-specifics. One cannot, however, escape the impression that the chemical basis of many of these studies is lacking. Some of the problem areas were pointed out in the foregoing sections. To a certain extent there seems to be lack of appreciation of the diffusion rates of compounds with different volatilities and of the extent to which these differences can influence the outcome of behavioral tests. It is difficult to make an estimate of the persistence of semiochemicals that are released into the laboratory atmosphere or that are left on objects or surfaces in arenas in which tests are conducted. From what is known about the evaporation rate of some heavy compounds that are considered to be semiochemicals, it could take several weeks or even months for these compounds to be depleted to levels that cannot be detected by currently available instrumentation levels at which meaningful information could still be available to experimental animals. This then leaves the question unanswered as to when it would be safe to conduct behavioral experiments in a laboratory or arena that had been occupied by conspecifics. [Pg.284]

Lewis thought he saw horses outside and decided that he and Carter could scatter, get on the horses and ride away. He stayed in his room for long periods planning this escape. Visual imagery varied in tone, causing him to be either pleased or disturbed. Mostly he gave only vague descriptions of its content, other than a beach where he felt all alone. [Pg.56]

The plan of this chapter is the following. Section II gives a summary of the phenomenology of irreversible processes and set up the stage for the results of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics to follow. In Section III, it is explained that time asymmetry is compatible with microreversibility. In Section IV, the concept of Pollicott-Ruelle resonance is presented and shown to break the time-reversal symmetry in the statistical description of the time evolution of nonequilibrium relaxation toward the state of thermodynamic equilibrium. This concept is applied in Section V to the construction of the hydrodynamic modes of diffusion at the microscopic level of description in the phase space of Newton s equations. This framework allows us to derive ab initio entropy production as shown in Section VI. In Section VII, the concept of Pollicott-Ruelle resonance is also used to obtain the different transport coefficients, as well as the rates of various kinetic processes in the framework of the escape-rate theory. The time asymmetry in the dynamical randomness of nonequilibrium systems and the fluctuation theorem for the currents are presented in Section VIII. Conclusions and perspectives in biology are discussed in Section IX. [Pg.85]

It is in this context, in which psychosocial treatments have been mobilized and an appropriate treatment setting has been chosen, that medications can be helpful. The use of psychiatric medications to treat substance use in isolation, apart from such a comprehensive treatment plan, sends the wrong message. The substance abuser typically already leans too heavily on substances to either escape or solve problems. We can quickly succumb to the temptation to join in this dependence on substances to resolve all problems. However, in the context of a comprehensive treatment plan, the substance abuser can benefit from psychiatric medication without unduly seeing it as a panacea. Just like the psychosocial treatments, the use of psychiatric medications should be tailored to the individual s specific treatment needs as well. This includes both medications to treat the substance use disorder by detoxification or craving reduction and medications to treat comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions that may be underlying much of the incentive for continued drug use. [Pg.191]

The artist once explained to an interviewer, Katherine Kuh, that the idea of letting a piece of thread fall on a canvas was accidental, but from this accident there came a carefully planned work. Most important was the acceptance and recognition of this accidental stimulation. Many of my highly organized works were initially suggested by just such chance encounters. " For him, particularly his fabrication of Three Standard Stoppages, was really when 1 tapped the mainspring of my future. In itself, it was not an important work of art, but for me it opened the way—the way to escape from those... [Pg.307]
