Erosion corrosion sensitive materials

Reasonably, the corrosion form is typical at relatively high velocities between the material surface and flie fluid, and it is particularly intensive in cases of two-phase or multiphase flow, i.e. hquid-gas and liquid-solid particle flow. Components often liable to erosion corrosion are propellers, pumps, turbine parts, valves, heat exchanger tubes, nozzles, bends, and equipment exposed to liquid sputter or jets. Most sensitive materials are those normally protected by corrosion products with inferior strength and adhesion to flie substrate, e.g. lead, copper and its alloys, steel, and under some conditions aluminium/aluminium alloys. Erosion or abrasion corrosion occurs when there is a relative movement between a corrosive fluid and a metallic material immersed in it. In such cases, the material surface is exposed to mechanical wear, leading to metallically clean surfaces, which results in a more active metal. Most sensitive materials are those normally protected by passive oxide layers with inferior strength and adhesion to the substrate, such as lead, copper, steel and some aluminum alloys. When wearing particles move parallel to the material surface, the corrosion is called abrasion corrosion. On the other hand, erosion corrosion occurs when the wearing particles move with an angle to the substrate surface. ... 

Temperature The temperature of the extraction should be chosen for the best balance of solubility, solvent-vapor pressure, solute diffusivity, solvent selectivity, and sensitivity of product. In some cases, temperature sensitivity of materials of construction to corrosion or erosion attack may be significant. 

Dents in tubing can induce erosion failures, especially in soft metals such as copper and brass. Welding and improper heat treatment of stainless steel can lead to localized corrosion or cracking through a change in the microstructure, such as sensitization. Another form of defect is the inadvertent substitution of an improper material.
