Epoxides reaction with allyl silanes

Allyl silanes react with epoxides, in the presence of Bp3-OEt2 to give 2-allyl alcohols. The reaction of a-bromo lactones and CH2=CHCH2Si SiMe3)3 and AIBN leads to the a-allyl lactone. " Benzyl silanes coupled with allyl silanes to give ArCH2—R derivatives in the presence of VO(OEt)Cl2 " and allyltin compounds couple with allyl silanes in the presence of SnCU. In the presence of Lewis acids allyl silanes and stannanes react with epoxides generally at the sterically less demanding carbon atom. Other electron-rich alkenes, such as ketene acetals, can also be used as nucleophiles. The strong Lewis acids required might, however, also lead to rearrangement of the epoxide before addition of the nucleophile can occur (last reaction, Scheme 4.72). 

This book chapter is limited to Lewis acid-mediated reactions, and does not discuss the important field of Lewis base-mediated allylations, nor does it describe the reactions of allylsilanes with other electrophiles such as epoxides, imines, and allyl-X (X = -Cl, -OR, -OAc). Allyl- and vinylsilane chemistry was one of the first areas of reagent synthesis impacted by CM methodology. Allylsilanes are commonly employed in nucleophilic additions to carbonyl compounds, epoxides, and Michael acceptors (the Sakurai reaction) vinylsilanes are useful reagents for palladium-coupling reactions. As the ubiquitous application of CM to this substrate class has recently been described in several excellent reviews, this topic will not be discussed in detail, with the exception of the use of silane moieties to direct CM stereoselectivity (previously discussed in Section 11.06.3.2). 

Siloxane acrylates may be obtained by using siloxanes instead of polyesters by reacting active hydrogens of the silane with either allyl alcohol or aliyl glycidyl ether. Both reactions are catalyzed by platinum. The resulting alcohol or epoxide may be converted into the acrylate with acrylic acid.
