The aqueous layer is 98% to 99% water combined with electrolytes, glucose, urea, trace elements, and soluble proteins and mucins. It contains immunoglobulins (primarily IgA), lactate dehydrogenase, epidermal growth factor, and inhibitors of proteolytic activity. Protective substances in tears include lactoferrin, lysozyme, nonlysozyme antibacterial fector, complement and anticomplement factor and interferon, and immimoglobulins... 

Beside the GalNAc(a l-0)Ser/Thr linkage of the mucin-type O-glycans a number of additional 0-linkages have been identified. These include mainly fucose a-O-linked to Ser/Thr and glucose /3-0-linked to Ser found in the epidermal growth factor domains of different proteins [58] and IV-acetylglucosamine -0-linked to Ser/Thr on cytoplasmic and nuclear proteins.
