The study was awarded to Environmental Resources Limited (ERL), which undertook an indicative survey of information systems and requirements using a mix of country studies, telephone interviews and mailed questionnaires. The questions asked attempted to find out the supply of information in the countries reviewed, covering inter alia-,... [Pg.50]

Environmental Impact of Future Coal Production and Use in the EEC. Environmental Resources Limited. Graham and Trotman for the Commission of the European Communities, 1983. [Pg.29]

Today resource limitations have caused the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to reassess schedules for new rules. A 1987 USEPA survey indicated there were approximately 202,000 public water systems in the United States. About 29 percent of these were community water systems, which serve approximately 90 percent of the population. Of the 58,908 community systems that serve about 226 million people, 51,552 were classified as "small" or "very small." Each of these systems at an average serves a population of fewer than 3300 people. The total population served by these systems is approximately 25 million people. These figures provide us with a magnitude of scale in meeting drinking water demands in the United States. Compliance with drinking water standards is not... [Pg.8]

To develop efficient catalytic technology capable of solving contemporary problems related to energy and resource limitations, synthesis of materials, and environmental protection, novel concepts for catalyst design are needed. Catalyst design at the atomic level utilizing the techniques of advanced surface science is one of the possibilities but this can be applied only for model catalysts, and the syntheses of industrial catalysts by this method are not yet realistic (6). [Pg.117]

Breman, H. Rob Groot, J.J. and H. Van Keulen (2001) Resource limitations in Sahelian agriculture.- Global Environmental Change 11, 59-68. [Pg.163]

A census of people gives the world population in 1986 to be 4.9 billion people. Thus, the exponential model of world population appears to be a good fit. Exponential growth is also seen to be valid for microbes, plants, birds, insects, cancer cells, or any biological entity not limited by environmental resources. [Pg.187]

The future society and petrochemical-based industry are faced to energy and resource limitation and environmental problems due to the steadily decreasing availability of fossil fuels. Besides hydro-, wind-, and solar power, the biotechnological production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources is regarded as key technology to... [Pg.327]

Several reports discuss, in greater detail, the various national programs (NEA 2000, 2002 DOE 2001). In response to continued growth in population and economic prosperity, and growing rmderstanding of both resource limits and environmental impacts of fossil fuel use, it is hkely that nuclear power use will grow substantially, both nationally and globally over the... [Pg.2831]

Predictive Pb exposure models serve various pmposes in lead environmental epidemiology and human lead risk assessments. For example, weU-validated mechanistic, i.e., biokinetic, models can generate outputs that substitute for measurement data where gathering measurements may not be feasible or even possible. These constraints arise from realities of resource limits, poor subject accessibility, or inappropriate timing for gathering the... [Pg.317]

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other federal, state and local authorities govern security of supply in relation to quantity for surface and groundwater by the granting of an abstraction license. The license limits the total daily quantity and the rate at which the waters may be abstracted, taking account of the natural resource and the needs of other abstractors. Metered water supply is subject to contract with the water companies, who may impose quantity and draw-off rate limitations. The limitations imposed by the license or contract may influence plant location. [Pg.37]
