Environmental Protection Agency enforcement actions

All generators must keep receipts or manifests of waste shipped, and records of waste analysis for at least three years, or for the duration of any enforcement action by the appropriate State environmental protection agency. 

During the first six years of the existence of the Environmental Protection Agency, over 19,000 formal enforcement actions were taken for air, water, and pesticide pollution. Between January, 1976, and September, 1976, the EPA initiated 6,613 actions, resulting in fines and penalties in excess of 1.5 million. (1) A significant number of enforcement actions have been taken against chemical firms.
