Environmental issues lead pollution

Aquatic lead pollution has been an environmental and public health issue since ancient times (3). Widespread use of lead pipes, lead-lined storage tanks, and pipes joined with lead-based solder led to contamination of drinking water... [Pg.84]

Rapid industrial development and the diversified character of the world economy today have led to large volumes of different types of wastewaters. Also, hazardous waste disposal has become a leading environmental issue. Many industrial processes generate polluted wastewater that require necessary treatment to meet environmental regulations prior to discharge into receiving waters. [Pg.663]

Environmental problems are becoming an important aspect of our lives as industries grow apace with populations throughout the world. Solubility is one of the most basic and important of thermodynamic properties, and a property that underlies most environmental issues. This book is a collection of twenty-five chapters of fundamental principles and recent research work, coming from disparate disciplines but aU related to solubility and environmental pollution. Links between these chapters, we believe, could lead to new ways of solving new and also old environmental issues. Underlying this philosophy is our inherent belief that a book is an important vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge. [Pg.472]

This chapter shows that other information must also be considered before an environmental standard can be implemented successfully. The implementation of standards cannot be a totally science-based issue technical, social, and economic factors must also be considered. Critically, as discussed in Chapter 2, the legal or policy context must be clear from the start, and a standard based on scientific knowledge should then be applied to a specific policy context. However, in most situations there are few data and an incomplete understanding, which leads to uncertainty in the standard itself and, potentially, to its application. This uncertainty must be accounted for if a standard is to be applied consistently and fairly (Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution [RCEP] 1998). [Pg.31]

How can environmental problems—such as those associated with arsenic, DDT, and CFCs—be solved More specifically, how can the problems be resolved, how can release of pollutants into the environment be reduced or stopped, and how can harmful materials be removed from the environment The complexity of the issue is even greater if the question is extended to, Should efforts be made to remove the material from the environment Ultimately, this leads to the question, How can such problems be prevented in the future ... [Pg.35]
