Environment materials crisis

Environmental friendliness is becoming more important, since we seem to face a critical environmental crisis at this point, putting aside the authenticity of the situation. As a result, we have to take environmental friendliness into consideration when designing new materials or conventional materials. Since the surface is always the interface between bulk materials and the environment, materials surfaces should always be carefully designed. [Pg.251]

After the first oil crisis in 1975, there was great interest in feedstock recycling of polymers to recover oil and gas from this hydrocarbon source. Another goal was to protect the environment from landfilling of plastic materials that decompose very slowly. [Pg.475]

In the mid-1970s, with the petrol crisis, our society was made conscious of the limit in fuel and raw material resources, as well as the noxious balance in the equilibrium of our environment. Since then, chemists have proposed and developed methods and technologies to provide answers to these social worries. [Pg.309]

As we have seen in previous chapters, local knowledge is critical for effective risk assessment, but local experience may be so highly specific (site specific) that the lessons learned cannot he translated to new environments. Generalized instructions may require adjustment (as when carpenters file down a new door to fit an old door frame). In a crisis, individuals may not have time to articulate all of the uncertainties in the decision process. They need numerical risk assessments to help them assess whether they can bring conditions into compliance with standards in a timely manner. They know that any risk estimate is an uncertain approximation of material hazards underground, but they need some kind of approximation so that they can estimate risk and adjust their practices accordingly. ... [Pg.329]
