Enquiry/inquiry

A related theme of inquiry is the attempt to infer the evolution of a biological system, especially in the context of proteins. For proteins, the ancestral states and historical pathways can be established on the basis of functionalities, typically dependent on amino acids at key sites and the adaptive shifts from precursor arrangements (see, for example, Malcolm et al., 1990 Benner, 2002 Zhang and Rosenberg, 2002 Gaucher et al., 2003). Such an approach is important not only because of its implications for the so-called neutral theory of protein evolution, but also because it opens the possibility of linking these changes to environmental circumstances. Such a line of enquiry also offers the chance to consider whether the evolved system is in any way optimized. [Pg.203]

There has also been, in recent years, an upsurge of interest in matters relating to structural accidents. Reports of enquiries into recent accidents have become compulsive reading, whilst at the same time the redrafting of codes of practice into the limit state format has stimulated inquiry into the use of probability theory to determine suitable partial factors. Another aspect of this interest is the increasing concern about the way in which the behaviour of actual structures differs from the predictions based on idealised theoretical models or on isolated laboratory tests on physical models or elements of structures. [Pg.193]

The Secretary of State for Health immediately established an Inquiry, costing 14 million, chaired by Professor Ian Kennedy. The Enquiry began in October 1998 and the report published in July 2001 made almost 200 recommendations. [Pg.20]

Some systems, such as the UnitedStates Veterans Affairs, have invested heavily in both financial and quality assessments and as a consequence can monitor and track quality over time. In many healthcare systems, a considerable amount of safety and quality data is collected, but this has relatively little impact on day-to-day practice. The problem in Britain at least is not the paucity of the data but that the available information is widely scattered and not easily accessible to clinical teams and managers. The Bristol Inquiry report for instance, concluded that Bristol was awash with data (Aylin et al, 2004). However, little of this information was available to parents and it did not help in the identification, prior to the Enquiry, of the problems brewing there. A central feature of the recent report by Darzi (2009) is that quality must be the defining principle of the British NHS and that quality needs to be systematically measured. [Pg.96]

The Report of the Robens Committee (1972) represents a watershed in thinking about occupational health and safety in Britain. In May 1970 the then Labour Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity, Barbara Castle, appointed a Committee of Inquiry to undertake a wide-ranging review of health and safety in Great Britain. The Committee was Chaired by Lord Robens and its remit was to examine critically the provision made for the safety and health of persons in the course of their employment (1972, p. xiv) and to consider whether changes were needed and, if so, of what type. Three main factors prompted this enquiry ... [Pg.37]

In his report on the Ladbroke Grove rail enquiry Lord Cullen stated A key factor in the industry is the prevailing culture, of which safety culture is an integral part. There is a clear link between good safety and good business . He then went on to quote in submission of the HSE ... the need for a positive safety culture is the most fundamental brought before the Inquiry . [Pg.61]

Kantian Inquiry System to begin with, this Inquiiy System contains a set of independent models built around an independent set of innate ideas and potentially axioms, primitives and rules of inference. The Inquiry System selects a model from the collection and bnilds a Leibnizian fact net using this model as a base. Using a preset criterion the Inquiiy System determines the extent to which the fact net is satisfactory. The model that produces the most satisfactoiy fact net is the solution to enquiry ... [Pg.37]
