Engineering Design, Management, and Ethics

Most of the resources on quality control and production are classified as part of the discipline of industrial engineering. Some of the newer disciplines, such as failure analysis and risk management, grew from engineering problems. Revisions to industrial standards occur after disasters. How to balance human gains of development against environmental damage becomes an ethical issue. [Pg.29]

Environmental problems provide numerous examples in ethics and values. Vesilind uses that specialty as the subject for his textbook. Many somces on ethical issues cover specific types of research (i.e bioengineering, genetic engineering, animal research). The U.S. National Research Council (NRC) publishes results in many of these fields. The somces listed in this chapter are offered as a starting point for the creativity found in most engineers. [Pg.30]

Babcock, D. L. and L. C. Morse. 2009. Managing Engineering and Technology An Introduction to Management for Engineers, 5th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ Prentice Hall. [Pg.30]

Bronikowski, R. J. 1985. Managing the Engineering Design Function. New York Van Nostrand Reinhold. An older volume that contains useful information on basic managerial skills. [Pg.30]

Macaulay, D. 1998. The New Way Things Work. Boston Houghton Mifflin. Written in a clear, concise fashion, this work is suitable for children and understandable to everyone. The text, with numerous illustrations, explains the scientific principles and workings of hundreds of machines. This title updates his 1988 The Way Things Work to include new material on digital technology. [Pg.30]
