The ability for and interest in engagement in authentic inquiry is more likely to develop in students who are having sequential experiences in the various courses that help them build the concepts and confidence that are necessary to perform at this level of independence. In view of the desire to attract more students to careers in the STEM areas, it is important to provide experiences, especially in the introductory courses, that gain and maintain student understanding and interest. Conceptually, a learning community is a group of people committed to a path of inquiry and action who engage in face-to-face and online activities over an extended period of time and evolve and learn from one another. We envision that the four main dimensions of a successful learning community are comfort, trust, responsibility, and spontaneity with flexible boundaries. Logistically, the two courses are linked through an integrative seminar and the same cohort of students attends each course and the Seminar. 

The various research agendas engaging questions of fitness and fine-tuning applied to the cosmos stress that important future opportunities exist for continued and expanded inquiry into areas where the sciences touch on wider, deeper issues of human interest. It is important to note that the preliminary discussion recorded here represents relatively early-stage exploration into what may in time become a much larger and more coherent area of research. 

Resources. Three pragmatic principles help many veteran chemists engaged in the organic synthesis that drug discovery projects require. (1) They select target compounds that no colleague is already making. To do so calls for awareness of other researchers future plans and current tasks. Oral and written reports supply this information, as do informal inquiries. 

This decision greatly changes the nature of the inquiry companies must undertake in deciding to market patented processes. The first inquiry in many cases will now be whether the articles sold for use with the patented process are staples. If so, all of the restrictions of the patent misuse doctrine apply. If not, patent holders may require users of the patented process to buy from them the articles, such as chemicals, needed to engage in the patented process. Briefs by the government and by private interveners assumed that a decision in favor of the patent owner in Dawson Chemical Co. v. Rohm Haas Co. would allow patent owners to charge a higher royalty to licensees who use the nonstaple products of others. However, the court did not reach this question.
