Emulsifying agents diethanolamine

Ethanolamine, HOCH2CH2NH2, and diethanolamine, (HOCH2CH2)2NH, are used commercially to form emulsifying agents and to absorb acidic gases. Propose syntheses of these two compounds. 

The soaps of the ethanolamines are extensively used in textile treating agents, in shampoos, and emulsifiers. The fatty acid amides of diethanolamine are applied as builders in heavy-duty detergents, particularly those in which alkylaryl sulfonates are the surfactant ingredients. The use of triethanolamine in photographic developing baths promotes fine grain structure in the film when developed. 

Diethanolamine is used in the production of surface-active agents and lubricants for the textile industry as an intermediate for rubber chemicals as an emulsifier as a humectant and softening agent as a detergent in paints, shampoos, and other cleaners and as an intermediate in resins and plasticizers.

A wide variety of amine condensates can function as foam boosters, wetting agents in aqueous/nonaqueous systems, emulsifiers, and dispersants. These are mainly reaction products of diethanolamine (DEA) or mono-ethanolamide (MEA) with fatty acids at a 2 1 ratio. Excess DEA converts both the amino and the amido ester to an active 2 1 product.
