One slot was cut directly above the blade passage emplacement. The other slot was sealed off to prevent leakage. As the disc was lowered into close proximity to the blade tips, the blade passage was completed. The clearance between disc and blade was kept at 0.035 of an inch. The disc, when spun from above, acted as the rotating shroud. 

At the Lipari Landfill site in New Jersey, the gas venting system installed in 1983 consisted of two underground 4-inch (10-cm) perforated PVC pipes and five vent risers. Two parallel PVC pipes were installed 200 feet apart prior to cap emplacement during the period of wall construction and were placed about 3 feet beneath the finished grade. The vent risers were connected to the buried manifold pipes and consisted of open pipe installed perpendicular to the underground pipes and the ground surface. The spectrometer was a Physical Electronics Model 548 modified for emplacement in a glovebox so that actinide samples could be examined. Spectra were taken using AIK radiation (1486.6 eV). Underground injection is the subsurface emplacement of fluids through a well or hole whose depth is greater than its width. Injected fluids can include hazardous waste, brine from oil and gas production, and certain mining processes. An injection well can include a septic well, cesspool, or dry well. The SDWA allows regulation of UIC to protect usable aquifers from contamination, with additional restrictions and controls under the 1984 Amendments to RCRA. 

Injection of compressed CO2 into the deep ocean has already been tested. The goal of this approach is to emplace the CO2 into waters with low temperatures, ensuring the formation of relatively immobile gas hydrates. This strategy has the potential to sequester thousands of gigatonnes of carbon, but likely environmental impacts include (1) a change in the pH in the seawater near the emplaced gas hydrates, (2) benthic kills, (3) other ecosystem impacts, and (4) release back to the atmosphere as an eventual consequence of meridional overturning circulation.
