Elephantopus

This tropical genus is particularly well known because one species, Elephantopus scaber, is now a widely distributed, invasive herb in many countries. There are approximately one dozen species of these herbaceous perennials in North and South America. [Pg.285]

The levels of Elephantopus spicatus [syw. Pseudelephantopus spicatus C.F. Baker, Vernon-ieae] are used for the treatment of cough and headache. Applied topically, they are employed as an antipyretic, for the treatment of erysipelas, skin infections, and measles. A preparation made from the roots is taken as a remedy for colic the whole plant helps against diarrhea. It is one of the most popular cough remedies of middle America. [Pg.285]

Elephantopus mollis is interesting because it elaborates a series of cytotoxic antitumor germacranolides including molephantinin and phantomolin, which are cytotoxic in vitro and in vivo against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma and Walker 256 carcinosarcoma in rodents (104,105).
