Elemi, oil

The literature states that if one uses ice cold, concentrated sulfuric acid on a terminal alkene (a.k.a. allylbenzene) an alcohol (OH) intermediate will form Markovnikoviy on the secondary carbon (don t ask). What does this mean Let s take an example. Say one has some elemi oil and wants that elemicin that is in it. What one can do is chili, say, 500mLs of the oil to freezing and do the same for about 100-200mLs of concentrated sulfuric acid (at least 90% cone.). Next, one just mixes the two together for about 5 min. What will happen is that the cold H2SO4 will make a hydrogen...

Semmler and Liao have examined the solid body isolated from Manila elemi oil by Schimmel Co. This was found to be a sesquiterpene alcohol, CjgHjgO, which has been named elemol. Elemi oil, Elemi resinoid are obtained from exuded gum resin of Canarium luzonicum (Miqu.) A. Gray (Burseraceae), a tree growing in the Phillipines. The resin is extracted with a solvent to form the resinoid, which is a yellow to orange mass of high viscosity. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the gum resin and is a colorless to light yellow liquid. 

The major components of elemi oil are limonene (40-72%), a-phellandrene (10-24%), and the sesquiterpene alcohol elemol (1-25%) [488-491]. Both the resinoid and the oil have a fresh, citrus-like, peppery odor and are used predominantly in soap perfumes. (FCT 1976 (14) p. 755 [8023-89-0] (oil), [9000-74-2] (resin). 

Elemi Oil From the elemi tree of the Philippines and nowhere else. The true oil comes from scraping the bark and is so thick that it is often termed as resinous. The elemicin content ranges from 3.4 -10.6%. 

About 50 elemanes known to date comprise p-elemenone from the oil of myrrh, representing the Cope rearrangement product of germacrone, (-)-bicycloelemene from peppermint oils of various provenance (e.g. Mentha piperita or Mentha ar-vensis), and p-elemol which is not only a minor component of Javanese oil of citro-nella but is also found in the elemi oil with an odor like pepper and lemon, expressed from the Manila elemi resin of the tree Canarum luzonicum (Burseraceae).

Around 60 elemanes are known at present and some of these have been isolated from woody tissues. (-)-Elemol (206) was first isolated in 1907 (350) from Manila elemi oil obtained from the oleoresin of Canarium luzonicum. (-)-)ff-Elemene (209) (238, 396), shyobunone (210) (419), and a few related elemanes occur in the essential oil from rhizomes of Acorus calamus, Resin from Ferula spp. (Galbanum resin) contains 10-epi-elemol (211) (391). The furane derivative, curzerenone (212), has been isolated from rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria (195). The majority of presently known elemanes have a lactone ring and are known as elemanolides they have been recently rewiewed (146). Callitrin (213) is an example of an elemanolide that has been isolated from the heartwood of Callitris col-umellaris (59). 

In the case of phellandrene, Clover observed that the a-modification of this terpene occurs in elemi oil. The rotation of the phellandrene diminished slowly if left standing at ordinary temperature. When the phellandrene was left standing, crystals separated on the glass walls of the bottle, the formation of which must be attributed to autoxidation of the phellandrene after purification from hot acetic ether they melted at 164 5 to 165 5, and had a composition corresponding to the formula 10 18 2 ...
