Electrostatic precipitators flow through

The gaseous ammonia is passed through electrostatic precipitators for particulate removal and mixed with the cooled gas stream. The combined stream flows to the ammonia absorber where the ammonia is recovered by reaction with a dilute solution of sulfuric acid to form ammonium sulfate. Ammonium sulfate precipitates as small crystals after the solution becomes saturated and is withdrawn as a slurry. The slurry is further processed in centrifuge faciHties for recovery. Crystal size can be increased by employing one of two processes (99), either low differential controUed crystallization or mechanical size enlargement by continuous compacting and granulation. [Pg.359]

Other burners are used for low capacity operations. A cascade or checker burner, ia which molten sulfur flows down through brick checkerwork countercurrent to a flow of air, is used ia small units with a sulfur trioxide converter to condition gases entering electrostatic precipitators at boiler plants operating on low sulfur coal. A small pan burner, which is fed with soHd, low carbon sulfur, is used to produce sulfur dioxide for solution ia irrigation water to control the pH and maintain porosity ia the soil. The same type of burner is used to disiafect wastewater ia this case sulfur dioxide is used iastead of chlorine. [Pg.145]

The generating unit investigated had a 93-megawatt output and went on line in September 1949. The unit contained a pulverized coal, corner-fired furnace with an Aerotec Corp. mechanical ash collection system and a Research Cottrel electrostatic precipitator. At a 93-megawatt output, a steam flow of 810,000 lbs/hr resulted in a gas flow through the electrostatic precipitators of 232,700 cu ft/min (CFM) in the north... [Pg.164]

In a separate investigation on the fragility of agglomerates, we have determined that the agglomerates up to modest sizes are sufficiently robust to withstand the rigors of the flow through cyclones and electrostatic precipitators (27). The research is based on experimental results with inertial separation devices (impactors) and comparing the experienced shear stresses in impactors as determined from theory, with the shear stresses experienced in cyclones. [Pg.244]

An electrostatic precipitator is to be used to control emission of 0.5-p.m-diameter particles from a paper mill. An efficiency for the collector of 99.6 percent is desired. If the total design flow through the unit is to be 6500 ft3/min, how many square feet of collector surface are required Assume w = 7.5 cm/s. [Pg.321]

In addition, subsequent biological effects can be modified by conditions of collection, including flow rates employed, the duration of collection, the type of filter or other techniques (e.g., electrostatic precipitation) used, and by gases flowing through material trapped on the filter. Also, it was noted that the method of extraction and particularly the choice of solvents could affect biological activity of the final sample. The... [Pg.369]

Regenerated catalyst and gas flowed out the top of the regenerator to three cyclone separators connected in series, where, approximately 99.9% of the catalyst was separated from the flue gases and deposited in the regenerated catalyst hopper. The stack gas was then passed through a waste gas fresh feed heat exchanger to a Cottrell electrostatic precipitator where 96-98% of the fine catalyst not separated by the cyclones was recovered and returned by air injection to the inlet of the tertiary regenerated catalyst cyclone. [Pg.205]

When oxygen-rich air is blown through a copper matte a large amount of SO2 is produced. This is contaminated with dust from the ores and hence it is cleaned by scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators and then fed to the (attached) sulfuric acid plant. This plant consumes all the SO2 and produces sulfuric acid. However, due to copper converter operations, the percentage SO2 and the gas flow vary considerably. External heating sources (oil fired burners) are provided if required and similar workings are used for zinc smelters and to use the SO2 produced for sulfuric acid production. [Pg.14]

Electrostatic precipitators that are suitable for removal of fine particulate matter, such as fly ash, from power plant flue gases operate on the principle of charging the particles with ions followed by collection of the ionized particles on a surface from which they are subsequently removed. Fabric filtration, which is used for removal of extremely fine particulate matter, is accomplished in a bag-house in which are hung a number of filter bags through which the gas stream flows. [Pg.759]
