The presence of an inherently dissymmetric chromophore in a molecule clearly provides a key to obtaining stereochemical information from both electronic CD and, as demonstrated by the CH2CH2C H fragment, from VCD spectra. A number of commercial instruments are available for measuring electronic CD spectra. The phenomenon is a small difference between two large numbers, so these instruments must be well maintained if they are to function properly. A well-tuned instrument that is routinely flushed with nitrogen and periodically serviced to replace damaged optics will make measurements to 180nm, although data collection equivalent to a 60 s time constant may be necessary at the shortest wavelengths. [Pg.2]
