Electricity power generation running speed

Hyundai introduced its new i-Blue Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. The i-Blue platform incorporates Hyundai s third-generation fuel cell technology and is powered by a 100-kW electrical engine and fuel cell stack. It is fueled with compressed hydrogen at 700 bar stored in a 115 liter tank. The i-Blue is capable of running more than 600-km per refueling stop and has a maximum speed of 165-km/h. [Pg.175]

A further possible and important application for the Na/S and ZEBRA cells is in load levelling . By this is meant the storage of electrical energy from power supply generators when demand is relatively low and its release into the supply network (the grid ) at peak demand times. The WHRB is sometimes bypassed to maintain temperatures in the downstream units. The steam generation gets reduced at this time, and the turbine cannot get fiill supply. However, the electric motor is always kept on, and hence, the air blower continues to run at a normal speed. The power drawn by the motor is reduced automatically to the extent of load shared by the steam turbine. Below that speed it operates as a motor and takes power from the grid. This motor/generator is used because the turbine takes some time to build up to a speed where it can generate electricity. Standby power can be defined as a souree of electricity that becomes available when the mains source of electricity ceases to be available. The choice of a standby system lies between batteries, usually lead-acid or nickel-cadmium, and generators, or a combination of the two. For many applications, the battery s ability to provide the power required instantly makes it more suitable. Indeed, even in large installations for which a generator is essential, batteries are often used both to start the generator and to provide power for the initial period until the generator is running to speed. [Pg.368]
