Canadian interests span into hydrogen production, delivery and utilization, primarily in fuel cell applications in transportation, stationary and portable systems. Furthermore, codes and standards for hydrogen systems are an important area of activity. The range of future electrical requirements for early adopters, such as the military, is very wide with numerous applications for various electrically powered systems. The introduction of hydrogen as an energy carrier into the commercial and military sector offer similar and sometimes unique challenges in all the areas discussed. [Pg.37]

Having now determined to total amount of nuclear electricity required, the thorium fuel input to the energy amplifiers can be calculated from the design data of Rubbia and Rubio (1996). The thermal output from the prototype design reactor is 1500 MW, with a fuel amount of 27.6 t in the reactor (Fig. 5.42). The fuel will sit in the reactor heat-generating unit for 5 years, after which the "spent" fuel will be reprocessed to allow for manufacture of a new fuel load with only 2.9 t of fresh thorium oxide supply. This means that 2.6/5 t y of thorium fuel is required for delivery of 5 x 1500 MWy of thermal power over 5 years, or 675 MWy of electric power, of which the 75 MWy is used for powering the accelerator and other in-plant loads. The bottom line is that 1 kg of thorium fuel produces very close to 1 MWy of electric power, and 1 kt thorium produces close to 1 TWh. ... [Pg.300]

Chlorine may be expensive, depending upon the location of the plant and its size, the cost varying from 15 to 3 cents per pound. Freight and handling charges and the quantities to be purchased all determine the final cost. Ozone costs vary directly with the cost of purchased electric power, and are about 13 cents per pound (based on 1 cent power) no freight, delivery, or handling costs are necessary (11). [Pg.67]

The schematic of the recent process technology for the Pittsburgh and Midway Solvent Refined Coal process is shovm in Figure 1. The salient aspects of the process technology as they aflFect economics are (a) delivery of the product as a solid fuel product or as a hot liquid (b) byproducts—light liquid hydrocarbon, sulfur, and electrical power (c)... [Pg.81]

With the rapid acceptance of the Hall-Heroult electrolytic method of aluminum production, facilities using this process have tended to be constructed in areas with abundant, low-cost electric power (Table 12.2). In addition, to minimize shipping costs it is usual to process bauxite ore to purified alumina at the mine site for shipment to smelters (Table 12.2). Thus, aluminum smelters are sited so as to provide easy shipping access for economical alumina delivery from the mine. The production of aluminum from bauxite logically can be considered in two steps the first, production of high-purity alumina from the working of natural bauxite deposits, and the second, electrolytic reduction of alumina to the metal. [Pg.366]

It would not be very useful for homeowners to use their own electric power to electrolyze water for hydrogen to run a fuel cell to generate electricity. Delivery of hydrogen to the home is likely be prohibitive in the near future. [Pg.139]
