Egg hatching

Larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, which are shallow feeders, were reared at room temperature by methods similar to those used in culturing Anopheles mosquito larvae (2, 6). Filter papers containing the eggs (furnished through the courtesy of R. E. Heal, Merck Co., Inc., Rahway, N. J.) were placed in tap water in shallow porcelain pans (12 X 7 inches, and 2 inches deep). The eggs hatched within 24 hours. When the larvae had hatched, powdered dog biscuit was added daily at the rate of 100 mg. per liter of water.

Another role of bluelight is exhibited by the moth Pectinophora gossypiella. A circadian rhythm of egg hatching can be initiated with a brief light pulse. The action spectrum (similar to Fig. 16 2,27)) again suggests a flavin photoreceptor.

The transport of mirex out of Lake Ontario, (a known reservoir), to its tributaries is also possible as a result of migrating fish which move from the lake into the tributary streams to spawn. Fish, such as Pacific salmon, become contaminated with mirex while in the lake. These fish then swim upstream in the tributaries to their spawning grounds, spawn, and die. A direct transfer of mirex may then occur when resident stream fish feed on the decomposing carcasses and/or eggs, both of which contain mirex residues. Indirect transfer can occur as a result of the release of mirex from the salmon into the water or sediments and subsequent movement up the food chain. Movement of mirex back into Lake Ontario is also possible when the contaminated eggs hatch and surviving juvenile salmon return to the lake (Lewis and Makarewicz 1988). 

Female Lomamyia lay their eggs clustered on little stalks they attach to termite-infested wood. How they choose egg sites is unexplored. When the eggs hatch, the larvae crawl down the stalk and into the wood to search out termite nests, where they make their home. The resident termites seem to accept them, although the larvae are cautious when termites are nearby. Do the larvae smell like termites Despite the apparent peace between them, the larvae live by preying upon the termites in an odd manner.
