Mechanical and biological methods are very effective on a large scale, and physical and chemical methods are used to overcome particular difficulties such as final sterilization, odor removal, removal of inorganic and organic chemicals and breaking oil or fat emulsions. Normally, no electrochemical processes are used [10]. On the other hand, there are particular water and effluent treatment problems where electrochemical solutions are advantageous. Indeed, electrochemistry can be a very attractive idea. It is uniquely clean because (1) electrolysis (reduction/oxidation) takes place via an inert electrode and (2) it uses a mass-free reagent so no additional chemicals are added, which would create secondary streams, which would as it is often the case with conventional procedures, need further treatment, cf. Lead dichloride occurs in nature as the mineral cotunnite. The compound is used in making many basic chlorides, such as Pattison s lead white. Turner s Patent Yellow, and Verona Yellow, used as pigments. Also, it is used as a flux for galvanizing steel as a flame retardant in nylon wire coatings as a cathode for seawater batteries to remove H2S and ozone from effluent gases as a sterilization indicator as a polymerization catalyst for alpha-olefins and as a co-catalyst in manufacturing acrylonitrile. [Pg.465]

However, the chief source of chloroform is probably chlorination of naturally formed humic acids, especially in the tropics and subtropics. The World Health Organization has set a limit of 30 fig L-1 as the acceptable chloroform concentration in drinking water. There are certain circumstances when it may be desirable to operate a series of stirred-tanks in cascade, with the effluent of one forming the feed to the next in the chain. Surfactin was produced from B. subtilis (ATCC 21332) in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) utilizing LS potato process effluent, which was obtained from a southeast Idaho potato processor, as previously described by Noah et al.
