In 20 ft. trenches, with squared ends, it is often possible to eliminate intermediate expansion joints by the use of end pads of closed-cell foam rubber as shown in Drawing 8. This, in effect, "floats" the brick lining between the two foam pads, absorbing its expansion in both directions. FluidiZed-Bed Combustion. Fluidized-bed combustors are able to bum coal particles effectively in the range of 1.5 mm to 6 mm in size, which are floating in place in an expanded bed (40). Use of Surfa.cta.nts, Although the use of steam to improve dewatering is consistently beneficial, the effects of surfactants on residual moisture are highly inconsistent. Additions of anionic, nonionic, or sometimes cationic surfactants of a few hundredths weight percent of the slurry, 0.02—0.5 kg/1 of soHds (50), are as effective as viscosity reduction in removing water from a number of filter cakes, including froth-floated coal, metal sulfide concentrates, and fine iron ores (Table 2). A few studies have used both steam and a surfactant on coal and iron ore and found that the effects are additive, giving twice the moisture reduction of either treatment alone (44—46,49). [Pg.21]

An effective way of preventing vent loss is to use one of the many types of variable-volume tanks. These are built under API Standard 650. They may have floating roofs of the double-deck or the singledeck type. There are hfter-roof types in which the roof either has a sldrt moving up and down in an annular hquid seal or is connected to the tank shell oy a flexible membrane.
