Edema pitting

Beneath the surface of the skin lie the subcutaneous tissues, consisting of various cotmective tissues, fascia, and fat. These tissues normally have a shghtly spongy feel. Edema fliud may collect here and produce a "doughy" feel. Sometimes these tissues will "pit" with pressure. The pitting will remain for a time and is almost alw s indicative of edema. Pitting may be observed when pressure is applied to edematous ankles or sacrum...

Abd Soft, non-tender, and bowel sounds are present 2 + pitting edema of extremities extending to below the knees is observed...

A 73-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, gout, osteoarthritis, and hypertension is hospitalized with possible urosepsis. He recently completed a 10-day course of antibiotics and was ready for discharge when his morning labs showed an increase in BUN and serum creatinine concentration. Upon examination, he was found to have 2+ pitting edema, weight gain, nausea, elevated blood pressure, and rales on chest auscultation. 

A 76-year-old female with an eight-year history of CHF that has been well controlled with digoxin and furosemide develops recurrence of dyspnea on exertion. Edema is usually first detected in the feet or pretibial area in ambulatory patients and in the presacral area in bed-bound individuals. Edema is defined as pitting when the depression caused by briefly exerting pressure over a bony prominence does not rapidly refill. 

A 78-year-old man became short of breath. He had been taking rosiglitazone 8 mg/day for 6 months. He had renal insufficiency, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and congestive heart failure, with pitting edema and bilateral pleural effusions. He was refractory to intravenous furosemide and metolazone. Withdrawal of rosiglitazone and administration of bumetanide gave a net fluid output of 9.5 litres and the edema resolved. 

A 29-year-old man developed transient rises in systolic and diastolic blood pressures (160/90 previous blood pressure 130/84 mmHg) with raised transaminases and dependent pitting edema of both feet (81). 

In a single report, soft-tissue swelling around the elbow and localized mild pitting edema were thought to have been induced by deferoxamine (13). Although the clinical features suggested a deep-vein thrombosis, this was ruled out by a phlebogram. 

PE On physical examination she has 2+ pitting edema in her lower extremities and her hands are swollen. Lung and abdominal examination yields benign results, and she has brisk 3+ deep tendon reflexes (DTRs), but no clonus. Her fetus has a reassuring fetal heart tracing, and examination shov that her cervix is closed and noneffaced.
