As it can be observed in Fig. 2, three out of the 16 investigated compounds, namely, heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and its metabolite 2-oxo, 3-hydroxy-LSD (O-H-LSD), were not detected in any wastewater sample. Two other target analytes, 6-acetyl morphine (6ACM) and A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), were only present in influent wastewaters and with low detection frequencies. The most ubiquitous compounds, present in all influent and effluent wastewater samples analyzed, were the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine, and the amphetamine-like compounds ephedrine (EPH) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy). Cocaine, cocaethylene (CE, transesterification product of cocaine formed after the joint consumption of cocaine and ethanol), and morphine (MOR) were detected in all influent, but not in all effluent wastewaters (see Fig. 2).

The most well-known effect of Ecstasy is its ability to produce intense feelings of happiness, well-being, confidence, loss of inhibitions, and closeness to others. Ecstasy also produces strong feelings of empathy (the ability to identify with and share other people s feelings) and often makes the users feel like they love and want to hug everyone (hence its name, the hug or love drug). Ecstasy can also produce a mild rush or euphoria, although not nearly as intense as...

Street names for MDMA, besides ecstasy, include Adam, E, ecsta eve. Eve, H-bomb (with heroin), hug drug, love drug, M, pikachu (with PCP), psychedelic amphetamine, Versace, X, and XTC. Tablets of ecstasy usually have imprinted monograms. Some examples include E-mail, D G, Rolex, Nike, Fred Flint-stone, Pokemon, Batman, and cupid. 

Ecstasy tablets are often laced with other drugs such as LSD, amphetamine, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and Rohypnol (Roofies). GHB was first synthesized in 1960 and introduced as a general anesthetic. Because of its narrow safety margin and its addictive potential, it is not available in the USA for this purpose at present. Before causing sedation and coma, GHB causes euphoria, enhanced sensory perceptions, a feeling of social closeness, and amnesia. These properties have made it a popular "club drug" that goes by colorful street names such as "liquid ecstasy,"... 

THC was first isolated from hashish in 1964 by Raphael Mechoulam (1930-) and Yehiel Gaoni at the Weizmann Institute. Mechoulam had obtained 5 kg hashish from Israeli police officials and the earliest scientific work on THC and cannabinoids used this source. In the early 1990s, the specific brain receptors affected by THC were identified. These receptors are activated by a cannabinoid neurotransmitter called arachidonylethanolamide, known as anandamide. Anandamide was named by Mechoulam using ananda, which is the Sanskrit word for ecstasy. Anandamide is thought to be associated with memory, pain, depression, and appetite. THC is able to attach to and activate anandamide receptors. These receptors are actually called THC receptors rather than anandamide receptors because researchers discovered that THC attaches to these receptors before anandamide was discovered. The areas of the brain with the most THC receptors are the cerebellum, the cerebral cortex, and the limbic system. This is why marijuana affects thinking, memory, sensory perception, and coordination. 

The results of our experiment would indicate that psilocybin (and LSD and mescaline, by analogy) are important tools for the study of the mystical state of consciousness. Experiences previously possible for only a small minority of people, and difficult to study because of their unpredictability and rarity, are now reproducible under suitable conditions. The mystical experience has been called by many names suggestive of areas that are paranormal and not usually considered easily available for investigation (e.g., an experience of transcendence, ecstasy, conversion, or cosmic consciousness) but this is a realm of human experience that should not be rejected as outside the realm of serious scientific study, especially if it can be shown that a practical benefit can result. Our data would suggest that such an overwhelming experience, in which a person existentially encounters basic values such as the...
