Economic units

The periodic development and use of new steel alloys can improve ferrous corrosion resistance however, where economizer units are constructed of copper alloys, under certain conditions serious copper corrosion problems may result. This occurs when FW having a pH over 8.3 also contains small amounts of ammonia and dissolved oxygen (DO). The ammonia may be present, for example, as a result of the overuse or inappropriate application of certain amines. Further damage may occur from the plating-out of the copper-ammonia ion then created as a cathode on boiler tubes. This promotes anodic corrosion of the immediate surrounding anodic areas.

A proper evaluation of warehouse equipment alternatives must be a quantitative comparison of the alternatives. This is not to say, however, that the choice should be based solely on dollars and cents or that the many qualitative attributes of the alternatives—flexibility, reliability, or meunteiina-bility, for example—have no bearing on the merits of one edtemative or another. On the contrary, superior qualitative attributes of an alternative wall often overshadow its apparent economic inferiority to the point where this alternative is chosen as best. In fact, where such a decision is made, the economically inferior alternative is judged not to be retdly economictdfy inferior because its qualitative attributes do indeed have economic value. The problem, then, is an inability to express this qualitative value in quantifiable, economic units (dollars tmd cents). One solution to this problem is to discontinue the attempt to quantify economictdly the qutilitative attributes of an alternative and instead quantify the qualitative attributes in judgmental units and convert the economic units—dollars and cents—into these judgmental units to form a common base for comparison of alternatives.
