Duty workers

The keyworker role is considered very important with all clients of the services. Once a worker is allocated to a case, they take the main treatment decisions, with supervision provided and in collaboration with the prescribing doctor. In normal circumstances such decisions are not over-ridden in duty worker contacts, and clients are made aware of this. Because the system is adhered to consistently there are relatively few attempts to problematically exploit it, and in general this approach is well accepted. 

If they re known to another Trust, contact their team and speak to the Duty Worker, CC or consultant. Once discharged, the GP usually has copies of letters, whilst Medical Records holds comprehensive notes.

After about 40 months of service, the rig/platform was no longer used for drilling, but it served as a so-called flotel (i.e., a floating hotel) for workers from the close by Edda platform. On March 27,1980, wind gusts of approximately 40 knots created waves up to 12 m high that, in turn, caused the rig/platform to collapse into the North Sea, and resulted in the death of 123 off-duty workers.

Contractors and subcontractors are typically required by contract to be responsible for their own workers and should provide a level of oversight to meet all specifications. The primary contractor who is responsible for the worksite typically establishes the minimum requirements, controls access to the worksite, and verifies that subcontractors fulfill their health and safety duties and responsibilities. Wlien these specifications are defined, all contractors and subcontractors should meet or exceed these requirements, as appropriate. This could be based on the nature of the assigned tasks and associated hazards [2]. 

Existing respiratory protection or hearing conservation programs can be referenced and integrated, as appropriate, into the site-specific medical surveillance program after worksite hazards have been considered. At some sites, workers are provided a fitness-for-duty card indicating their current medical status and the medical surveillance programs in which they participate [1].

Is the worker trained and qualified to perform this duty ... 

On many occasions, long hours of work are required because the worker may have to stay on duty at the end of the shift to fill in for someone on the next shift or because there are plant start-up or shutdown operations. 

Many small laboratories use kitchen cabinets, also available in wood or steel, and are quite happy with them. Normal prices of high quality kitchen cabinets are not much lower than those of the laboratory variety, but special bargains are often available. They come in far fewer types of units, which make the laboratory benches less adaptable to specific uses. Finishes are not made to resist chemicals, and the overall construction is seldom of the heavy-duty type. In a microbiological laboratory where they have been used for years, however, workers have been pleased with them. They were adequate for the light duty service and were purchased when a local dealer had a clearance sale.

The nuclear explosions that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed 100,000 to 200,000 people instantaneously. Probably an equal number died later, victims of the radiation released in those explosions. Millions of people were exposed to the radioactivity released by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The full health effects of that accident may never be known, but 31 people died of radiation sickness within a few weeks of the accident, and more than 2000 people have developed thyroid cancer through exposure to radioactive iodine released in the accident. Even low levels of radiation can cause health problems. For this reason, workers in facilities that use radioisotopes monitor their exposure to radiation continually, and they must be rotated to other duties if their total exposure exceeds prescribed levels.

An alarm system should be provided to warn workers of power interruptions that have occurred during non-duty hours. Such evidence that engineering controls have been compromised alerts incoming personnel to the necessity for first entry monitoring of laboratory rooms. 

On February 6, 2005—a month after the Graniteville wreck—the three-man crew accused of failing to switch the railroad track back to the main line before disaster hit were fired by Norfolk Southern Railways. A railroad spokesman stated that the workers were terminated because they failed to perform their duties properly. Union officials said the three men will appeal, and each man had at least twenty-five years experience. The accident on January 6, 2005, killed nine people and injured hundreds more. 

My day job is as a civil service electrician for the last thirty-four years at the Veteran s Administration hospital. March 5, 2006,1 had thirty-four years with civil service. After duty at the VA hospital, all the rest is a volunteer as a firefighter, rescue worker, or helping the county sheriff and the State Highway Patrol as an interpreter. Basically, I stay pretty busy. The federal government gave us three fire vehicles after the chlorine gas incident because our old equipment was done-in by corrosion caused directly by poison chlorine gas. This gas took the paint and chrome off our fire vehicles so it was unusable for any other purpose what do you think it did to my lungs and body at the same time ... 

Whoever sets about preparative work carelessly and thoughtlessly may easily come to harm. Bui even the careful are not secure against all danger. The serious accidents which, alas, again and again occur in chemical laboratories make it imperative that every worker in the laboratory should fully and seriously consider his duty towards his fellows. 

Charles Moureu was editor of the Annales de chimie et de -physique and of the Revue scientifique. In spite of his many scientific honors and duties, he always maintained affectionate and sympathetic contacts with the humble workers with whom his childhood years had been spent.
